Shockers Tie School Record With Tenth Straight Win

1/21/2012 5:31:00 PM

CARBONDALE, Ill.- Wichita State (14-5, 7-0) matched the longest winning streak in school history with their tenth straight victory, 78-68, Saturday afternoon over a Southern Illinois (4-13, 1-6) team looking to secure their second straight upset of the week. The Saluki's knocked off Missouri Valley Conference preseason favorite Missouri State on Thursday.

Chynna Turner carried the Shockers with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Haleigh Lankster and Jessica Diamond joined Turner in double figures with 17 and 15 points respectively.

Wichita State jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the game's opening minutes and never trailed in the contest.  The Salukis, however, used a 12-3 run in the first half to pull within one point on several occasions.

A Lankster pull-up jumper at the buzzer before haltime gave WSU a 34-27 lead at the break.  That advantage opened up to 14 points with just over 17 minutes remaining before the home team again chipped away at the Shocker lead.

Timely shots and effective free-throw shooting down the strech helped cage the Salukis and give WSU their fourth-straight win over SIU.

Turner connected on 9-of-14 field goals and 6-of-10 free throws while collecting six rebounds and forcing two steals.  Lankster added five steals and seven boards, while hitting 6-of-11 shots and 5-of-6 free throws.

The Shockers scored 26 points off 19 SIU turnovers and while the team shot - and made - just one three-point basket, WSU feasted at the free throw line, hitting a season-high 25-of-36 attempts.

In addition to tying the longest winning streak in school history, Saturday's win was Jody Adams' 61st at WSU, moving her past Darryl Smith for fourth place on the Shockers win list.

The Shockers will return home Friday for a 7:05 p.m. tip-off with Illinois State.
