Evansville, Ind. - The Wichita State University women's
basketball team withstood a late run by Evansville to stay unbeaten in the
Missouri Valley Conference with a 57-51 victory over the Purple Aces at the
Ford Center. Jessica Diamond delivered
16 points for WSU to lead all scorers.
The Shockers led 41-31 after a Krystle Henderson
three-pointer with 10:26 left in the game.
Evansville responded with five straight points and eventually tied the
game at 47 when Samantha Heck capped a three-point play with a free throw at
the 2:55 mark.
Diamond stepped back to knock down a long jumper moments
later and sealed the win with a steal and breakaway layup in the final minute.
The junior went 6-for-12 from the field and nailed all four
free throw attempts. She also tied for
the team lead with seven rebounds and forced four steals. Chynna Turner added 12 points and five rebounds. Briyana Blair topped the Purple Aces with 14
points.
The win was the ninth in a row for the Shockers. They can tie the school record with a victory
Saturday at Southern Illinois. Wichita
State remained the only undefeated team in MVC play at 6-0 and moved to 12-5
overall.
