SPRINGFIELD, Mo- Creighton scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to knock the Wichita State Shockers out of the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Springfield, Mo. Thursday afternoon.
Becca Changstrom threw a one-hitter to beat the Shockers 8-1 in the first round of the tournament. She went 7.0 innings and gave up just one run on one hit. She also recorded four strikeouts.
Jamie Hull picked up the Shockers only hit of the game with a triple in the sixth inning. Kiersten Dixon reached base twice by drawing two walks.
All three Wichita State pitchers saw action in the game, but sophomore Katie Armagost claimed the loss for the Shockers. She went 4.2 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits.
Creighton scored eight runs on 11 hits in the game. MaKenzie Michael led the Bluejays offense as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
Creighton took an early 2-0 lead over Wichita State in the bottom of the first inning by scoring two runs on three hits. Christa Ruf picked up two RBI with a single out to right-field that scored Liz McKewon and Amy Baker.
The Bluejays extended their lead out to 3-0 by scoring one run on one hit and one error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Changstrom hit a sacrifice fly out to center-field to score Emily Perry with the insurance run.
Creighton made it two consecutive innings of putting runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. CU extended its lead out to 7-0 by scoring four runs on five hits and one error. The Bluejays scored their runs on five different singles in the inning.
After walking Kiersten Dixon in the top of the first inning, Creighton retired 17-straight batters through the sixth inning. Dixon drew another walk in the top of the inning with two outs before Jamie Hull picked up the Shockers first hit of the game. She hit a triple to the right-center gap to score Dixon and pick up the RBI.
Wichita State finishes its 2011 season with a 20-37 overall record. Six-seeded Creighton moves on to face #3 Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
