CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- Hayley Temple hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to lead the Shockers in a come-from-behind, 5-3, win over Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa Sunday afternoon.
The Shockers were held hitless through the first five innings of play before WSU scored five runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning.
Temple led the Shockers' offense with the grand slam and four RBI. Five other Shockers each picked up one hit in the game.
Katie Armagost went 6.0 innings and held the Panthers to three runs on eight hits to pick up the win in the circle. Sloan Anderson picked up her third save of the seasn for the Shockers.
With the win, Wichita State improves to 17-35 on the season and 9-13 in MVC action. Northern Iowa falls to 29-24 on the year and 13-11 in Valley play.
Northern Iowa took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning by scoring two runs on four hits. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Armagost walked in one run before giving up a basehit up the middle.
Jamie Fisher had a no-hitter going for the Panthers through the first five innings of play. Kiersten Dixon picked up the Shockers first hit of the game with a sinlge to right-field in the top of the sixth inning. Hull and Gerritse followed Dixon with back-to-back singles of their own. Hayley Temple then gave the Shockers their first lead of the game when she hit a grand slam over the left-field fence. It was her fourth home run on the season and seventh of her career. Sammie Shook kept things going by picking up a single of her own back up the middle. Brittney Osborn reached first on an infield-single before Rachel Milnark scored Shook with a sacrifice fly out to right-field. Wichita State scored five runs on six hits in the inning to take a 5-2 lead over the Panthers.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, Armagost was able to settle down and hold UNI scoreless for four consecutive innings. Whitney Plein ended the scoreless streak by hitting a solo home run out to left-field in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Shocks held onto a 5-3 lead at the end of six innings of play.
Anderson came into the game from the bullpen to wrap up the seventh inning for the Shockers. She retired three-straight batters while picking up two strikeouts.
Wichita State returns to action on Thurs., May 5 to make up the final game of the series against Missouri State. The Shockers will travel to Springfield, Mo. for the single game at 7:00 p.m.
