Shockers Drop Two at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa.- Eranne Daugharthy hit a walk-off grand slam to beat Wichita State, 10-6, in the second game of the doubleheader in Cedar Falls, Iowa Saturday afternoon.

There were five ties and six lead changes in the second game as UNI stole both games of the doubleheader from Wichita State.

With the losses, Wichita State falls to 16-35 on the season and 8-13 in Missouri Valley Conference action. Northern Iowa improves to 29-23 on the year and 13-10 in Valley play.

Heather Gerritse lead the Shockers' as she went 4-for-7 on the day with a home run and two RBI.

Brianna Smet picked up both losses on the day as she falls to 4-15 on the season.

Northern Iowa scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Shockers 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. It was a pitcher's dual as both starting pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts.

Jamie Fisher picked up the win for the Panthers. She went a complete 7.0 innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. She gave up just one run on four hits as she improved to 18-9 on the season. Brianna Smet fell to 4-14 on the season with the loss. She went 6.0 innings and held the Panthers to just two runs on three hits. Smet recorded five strikeouts.

Erin Carney, Heather Gerritse, Brittney Osborn, and Sammie Shook each picked up one hit in the game. Shook scored the Shockers' only run of the game as she hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Smet held the Panthers scoreless through the first three innings. She retired the first six batters of the game, before giving up the first hit in the top of the third inning. Northern Iowa broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Hannah Borschel hit a solo home run to give UNI a 1-0 lead. Smet recorded four strikeouts through the first four innings.

After hitting Kiersten Dixon in the first inning, Northern Iowa's starting pitcher, Fisher, retired 10-stright batters. Gerritse picked up the Shockers' first hit of the game in the fourth inning. Shook ended the Shockers' scoreless streak and evened the score at 1-1 with a solo home run to center-field in the top of the fifth inning. It was her 10th home run of the season and 13th of her career.

UNI loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Smet hit Eranne Daugharthy which allowed Mackenzie Daigh to score and give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Northern Iowa went on to win the game with the same score.

Wichita State came out ready to score in the second game of the doubleheader as they took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dixon was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day to lead off the inning. Jamie Hull moved her to second base with a sacrifice bunt and Gerritse moved her to third with a single up the middle. Hayley Temple picked up the RBI in the inning with a single back up the middle.

Daugharthy evened the score at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. All in all, the Panthers scored three runs on three hits in the inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Shockers.

Gerritse tied the score at 3-3 with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning. The homer was Gerritse's fifth on the season and 15th of her career. Carney picked up the third RBI of the inning scoring Shook with a single out to right-field. The Shockers took a 4-3 lead in the inning.

Courtney Dunker hit a triple out to right-field to score Rachel Gerking and even the score at 4-4. There were three lead changes through the first three innings.

Abney made it four lead changes as she hit a solo home run to right-field to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead in the bottom of fourth inning.

The Shockers scored two runs on three hits to claim the fifth lead change of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Dixon picked up the first RBI of the inning by scoring Carney with a hit down the left-field line. Hull picked up the second RBI of the inning as she scored Danika Miller with a single out to right field. WSU claimed a 6-5 lead at the half inning.

UNI decided to make it five ties as they evened the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Panthers turned it into six lead changes as a walk-off home run was the deciding factor.

Wichita State and Northern Iowa return to action on Sunday to wrap up the three-game series at 12:00 p.m.
