WICHITA, Kan.- After
scoring twelve runs in the first game, the Shockers were held to just two runs
on seven hits as they lost the second game of the doubleheader, 3-2, to the
Purple Aces in front of 211 fans at Wilkins Stadium.
The two teams split the doubleheader and return to action
tomorrow afternoon as they decide the outcome of the series. Wichita State
falls to 15-31 on the season and 7-11 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Evansville improves to 11-35 on the year and 5-14 in MVC action.
Sammie Shook led the Shockers' offense as she went 1-for-3
at the plate with a two-run home run. Shook was 3-for-5 on the day with three
home runs and seven RBI. Heather Gerritse was 2-for-3 at the plate for the
Shockers in the second game.
Danika Miller, Kiersten Dixon, Jamie Hull, and Erin Carney
were all 1-for-3 at the plate in the second game of the doubleheader.
Brianna Smet fell to 3-12 on the season as she picked up the
loss in the circle for the Shockers. She went 4.0 innings and gave up three
runs on six hits. Sloan Anderson saw 3.0 innings of action and held UE
scoreless on one hit.
Taylor Perry improved to 3-8 on the season as she picked up
the win for the Purple Aces. She went 7.0 innings and gave up just two runs on
seven hits, while picking up five strikeouts.
Evansville took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first
inning scoring two runs on two hits and two errors. The Purple Aces extended
their lead out to 3-0 in the top of the fourth scoring one run on two hits.
The Shockers reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the
fourth inning when Sammie Shook hit her third home run on the day and ninth of
the season. The two-run shot made it a 3-2 game in favor of the Purple Aces.
UE hit back-to-back singles in the top of fifth inning to put
runners on first and second with no outs. Wichita State turned its first triple
play of the season when they forced Alicia Betancur to line out to center-field
and catch both runners off their bags.
The two teams return to action on Sat., April 23 at 12:00
p.m. to wrap up the three-game series. Wichita State will honor its four
seniors approximately 20 minutes before the start of the game.
Shockers Mercy Aces, 12-4, in Five Innings
WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State softball team scored 10 runs on eight hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to run-rule Evansville, 12-4, in the first game of the doubleheader at Wilkins Stadium Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Sammie Shook hit two home runs and picked up five RBI as she went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs on the game. Freshman Erin Carney also went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate as she hit one home run, picked up an RBI, and scored two runs.
Kiersten Dixon was 2-for-3 in the first game and picked up three RBI and scored one run.Hayley Temple was 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs. Jamie Hull matched Dixon as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and also picked up two RBI.
Junior Brittney Osborn was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Shockers and scored two runs.
Sophomore Katie Armagost improved to 6-11 on the season as she picked up the win in the circle for the Shockers. She went 5.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits. She also recorded two strikeouts.
With the win, Wichita State improves to 15-30 on the season and 7-10 in Valley play. Evansville falls to 10-35 on the year and 4-14 in conference action.
Evansville reached the scoreboard first by scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. The Purple Aces took the early 2-0 lead after Amy Gaertner hit a double up the middle to score both Alicia Betancur and Tamara Robey.
The Shockers got one run back in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1. Erin Carney led off the inning with a single to right center. Brittney Osborn and Danika Miller moved her over into scoring position before Kiersten Dixon picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly out to left-field.
Wichita State displayed some power at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored 10 runs on eight hits to take an 11-2 lead over Evansville. Hayley Temple started the inning off for the Shockers as she hit a triple down the right-field line. Sammie Shook followed that up with a two-run home run out to left-field.It was her seventh home run of the season. Two batters later, Erin Carney hit her second home run of the season to make it a 4-2 game. Osborn picked up her second hit of the game and Miller reached on an error before Kiersten Dixon scored Osborn with a single to left-field. Hull picked up an RBI as she followed up Dixon's single with a hit of her own out to left-field. WSU batted around the line-up as four different Shockers saw two plate appearances. Temple picked up her second hit of the inning and Shook followed that up with her second home run of the inning and eighth on the season. The three-run shot scored Gerritse, Temple, and Shook.
Evansville made it a 11-4 game in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs on three hits, but the Shockers' claimed a run-rule victory in the bottom of the inning when Dixon hit a double up the middle to score Osborn.
Wichita State went on to win the game 12-4.
