WICHITA, Kan.- The
Wichita State softball team dropped its second game of the day to Indiana State
as the Sycamores took down the Shockers, 7-3, in the second game of the
double-header at Wilkins Stadium Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Wichita State falls to 8-23 on the season and
1-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Indiana State improves to 11-14 overall
and 2-5 in the Valley.
The Shockers were led by Kiersten Dixon who went 1-for-3 at
the plate with a home run, one RBI, and a run scored. Freshman Rachel Milnark
went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Third baseman, Sammie Shook, went 1-for-3 at the plate with
two runs scored. Hayley Temple and Danika Miller rounded out the hits for the
Shockers as Temple went 2-for-4 and Miller 1-for-3.
Brianna Smet got the start in the circle for the Shockers.
She went 4.0 innings and gave up just two runs on three hits. She also recorded
two strikeouts. Jamie Hull came into the game from the bullpen and picked up
her first loss on the season in just two appearances. She went 1.2 innings and
gave up five runs off of five hits. Sloan Anderson finished the game for the
Shocks going 1.1 innings and recording two strikeouts.
Kristen Felker improved to 6-5 on the season as she went 7.0
innings and gave up three runs on nine hits. She also picked up four strikeouts
on the day.
Offensively, the Sycamores posted eight hits on the game.
They were led by Bailey Wittenauer who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
The Shockers went to work early as they scored two runs off
of two hits and one error to take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning. Kiersten Dixon led off the inning with a solo home run back up the
middle. The home run was Dixon's third of the season and 16th of her
career. The 16 homers is good enough for sixth place on the career home runs
list. Sammie Shook kept the inning going by reaching on an error by the second
baseman and then advanced to second on the play. Rachel Milnark picked up the
second RBI of the inning by scoring Shook with a single up the middle.
The Sycamores made it a 2-1 game in the top of the fourth inning
by scoring one run off of two hits and one error. Olivia Andres scored on a
Hailey Tinsman single to left field. The Shockers got out of the inning by
throwing out Alex Lucas at third base on the same play.
Indiana State took its first lead of the game, 4-2, by
scoring three runs off of three hits and one error in the top of the fifth
inning. They made it three consecutive innings of putting runs on the
scoreboard by scoring three runs off of three hits and one error to take a 7-2
lead in the top of the sixth inning.
The Shockers made it a 7-3 game by scoring one run off of
two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Shocks loaded the bases with
back-to-back hits and a walk before Jamie Hull drew a walk at the plate to
score Shook.
The Shockers threatened with runners in scoring position in
the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Sycamores got out of the inning with
no harm done. Indiana State went on to win the game, 7-3.
Wichita State and Indiana State return to action Sunday
afternoon as they wrap up the three-game series at noon.
Shockers Fall, 9-3, to Sycamores
WICHITA, Kan.- Indiana State picked up its first conference win of the year as Wichita State fell, 9-3, to the Sycamores in the first game of a double-header Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
The Shockers were led by sophomore Sammie Shook who went 1-for-1 at the plate with a home run, two RBI,and a run scored. Shook also drew two walks on the day. Hayley Temple went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
Freshman Torrie Brown came in as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning and picked up her first career hit as a Shocker. Jamie Hull was 1-for-4 at the plate and scored one of the Shockers' three runs in the game.
Katie Armagost got the start in the circle for the Shockers and fell to 4-10 on the season with the loss. She went 3.1 innings and gave up four runs off of five hits. Sloan Anderson made an apperance in the game going 3.2 innings, while giving up five runs off of five hits.
Sara Evans picked up the win for Indiana State as she went 7.0 innings and gave up just three runs on six hits. The win improved her record to 2-3 on the season.
The Sycamores reached the scoreboard first scoring two runs off of one hit and one error in the top of the first inning. Alex Baumgart led off the inning by drawing a walk. She advanced to second when Stephanie Robinson forced an error on starting pitcher Katie Armagost. Both Baumgart and Robinson scored on an Alyssa Marcum double to right field. The Sycamores took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play.
ISU made it a 3-0 game by scoring one run off of two hits and one error in the top of the third inning. The Sycamores loaded the bases with two outs in the inning. Bailey Wittenauer scored when Hailey Tinsman was hit by a pitch.
The Sycamores scored three runs off of two hits to make it a 6-0 game in the top of the fourth inning. Wittenauer picked up three RBI in the inning with a bases clearing three-run home run to left center.
Wichita State reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring one run off of two hits. Jamie Hull reached on an infield single before Hayley Temple doubled to right field to score Hull and make it a 6-1 game.
ISU scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Shockers came right back and scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Erin Carney was hit by a pitch before Sammie Shook hit a two-run home run to right center to make it a 7-3 game.
Indiana State scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead over WSU. The went on to win the game with the same score.
