DENTON, Texas- The Wichita State Shockers lost, 9-1, to North Texas in the final game of the Courtyard Classic Sunday afternoon in Denton, Texas.
North Texas held the Shockers to just five hits on the game. Senior Kiersten Dixon led WSU going 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Brittney Osborn went 1-for-1 and scored the Shockers only run of the game. Sophomores Hayley Temple and Sammie Shook both picked up one hit in the game.
Senior Brianna Smet picked up the loss for the Shockers. She fell to 2-7 on the season as she went 2.1 innings, while giving up seven runs off of four hits.
Brittany Simmons (5-4) got the win for the Mean Green. She went 5.0 innings and only gave up one run off of five hits.
North Texas reached the scoreboard first, literally, as Mallory Cantler hit a two run home run off of the scoreboard in center field to give the Mean Green an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
UNT scored two more runs in the bottom of the second inning off of two hits and one error. Lesley Hirsch singled to left field to score Hayley Siebman and Brooke Foster to make the score 4-0.
Wichita State answered by scoring one run off of one hit in the top of the third inning. Brittney Osborn drew a walk to start off the inning and Rachel Milnark moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Kiersten Dixon then hit a double to left center to score Osborn and make it a 4-1 ball game.
North Texas scored for its third consecutive inning as they brought home three runs off of two hits in the bottom of the third inning. UNT led the Shockers, 7-1, after three innings of play.
The Mean Green score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game 9-1.
The Shockers travel to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State on Wed., March 9 at 5:00 p.m.
