DENTON, Texas- Wichita
State fell, 9-0, to North Texas in its fourth game of the Courtyard Classic in
Denton, Texas Saturday night.
Jamie Hull led the Shockers as she went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles. Hayley Temple picked up the Shockers' only other hit of the game going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Sloan Anderson (0-3) got the loss in the circle as she went
3.1 innings, giving up 6 runs off of seven hits. Only two of the runs were
earned.
Ashley Kirk improved to 5-2 on the season as she shutout the
Shockers. Kirk only gave up four hits
on the game and picked up a career high 14 strikeouts.
The Mean Green scored four runs in two innings to take a 4-0
lead after three innings of play. Caitlin Grimes reached on an error in the
outfield and then scored off of a Brooke Foster single up the middle. UNT went
on to score three more runs in the third inning off of three hits and one
error.
The Shockers had trouble with the Mean Green's starting
pitcher as she held them to just one hit through the first three innings.
During that time, she picked up eight strikeouts.
North Texas kept the bats going as they scored two more runs
off of four hits in the top of the fourth inning. They made the score 9-0 in the top of the seventh inning scoring three runs off of three hits.
Wichita State returns to action Sunday afternoon as they
wrap up the Courtyard Classic against North Texas at 3:00 p.m.
Shockers Fall, 4-3,in Extra Innings
DENTON, Texas- UT-Arlington scored two runs off of a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Shockers, 4-3, in extra innings.
After the score was tied at 2-2 after seven innings of play, the Mavericks and Shockers went to the international tie breaker. Rebecca Collom hit a walk-off home run in the ninth to beat Wichita State.
Wichita State (6-12) was led by sophomore Danika Miller and senior Heather Gerritse as they both went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Gerritse also finished the game with a home run.
Katie Armagost got the start in the circle going 3.0 innings and giving up no runs off of five hits. Brianna Smet fell to 2-6 on the season as she picked up the loss for the Shockers.
Teri Lyles picked up the win as she went 9.0 innings and gave up three runs off of eight hits, while picking up 12 strikeouts.
It was a pitcher's duel and defensive battle through the first three innings of play. Both pitchers held each team scorless, with Armagost only allowing three hits and Lyles only giving up two to the Shockers.
The Shockers broke through first when senior Heather Gerritse hit her first home run of the season over the fence in left center field. It was the 11th of her career and gave the Shockers a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Mavericks threatened in the bottom of the inning loading the bases with one out, but the Shockers were able to pull through and hold UTA scoreless. Brianna Smet came into the game in relief and forced Stephanie Gonzalez to pop up to Jamie Hull at first base. Erin Carney got the Shockers out of the inning with a nice play at third base. WSU held onto the 1-0 lead after four innings of play.
The Mavericks evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning off of an Erica Leflore home run over the fence in center field.
The Shockers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Brittney Osborn started things off with a single back up the middle. Rachel Milnark followed that up with a sinlge of her own to right field. Osborn then came around to score off of a Danika Miller single to center field.
UTA forced extra innings as they scored one run off of two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to even the score at 2-2. The Shockers' defense saved them as UTA left the bases loaded.
The Shockers started the eighth inning with Hayley Temple on second base due to the international tie breaker. She advanced to third on a passed ball, but WSU wasn't able to capitalize and bring her home.
Sammie Shook started at second base for the Shockers in the top of the ninth inning. Senior Kiersten Dixon hit a single to the left side of the infield to score Shook and give the Shocks a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Rebecca Collom hit a two run walk-off home run to beat the Shockers 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Wichita State returns to action tonight as they take on North Texas at 5:30 p.m.
