LUBBOCK, Texas- Wichita State battled strong winds as they fell to #19 Texas Tech, 10-2, in the final game of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas on Sunday.
Freshman Erin Carney led Wichita State (4-11) at the plate going 2-for-2 with two singles and two runs scored. Brittney Osborn and Rachel Milnark both finished the game with an RBI as they each had a hit in the contest.
Jamie Hull went 1-for-3 on the game. Hull had at least one hit in all five of the Shockers' games in the tournament, including eight hits and home runs overall. Hayley Temple had the Shockers' other hit of the game finishing 1-for-3 at the plate.
Texas Tech (16-0) made the score 1-0 early, scoring one run off of one hit and one error in the bottom of the first inning. Texas Tech had runners in scoring position with a single to the left side, a fielder's choice, and a walk. Stephanie Drewry scored on an error with a blooper by Logan Hall to second base. The Shockers and the Red Raiders were battling very strong winds from the start of the game.
Wichita State answered and evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning scoring one run off of two hits. Freshman Erin Carney led off the inning with a single past the third baseman. She advanced to second base with a sacrifice bunt by Sammie Shook. Meghan Boston moved her to third before Brittney Osborn doubled down the left field line to bring Carney home.
The Red Raiders stretched the game out scoring five runs off of four hits in the bottom of the third inning. Texas Tech loaded the bases with one out before Sandy James singled to left center to score Drewry. Raven Richardson picked up two RBI scoring Emily Bledsoe and Logan Hall with a single up the middle. TTU scored its fifth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Randi Tongate. When it was all said and done, the Red Raiders took a 6-1 lead at the end of the inning.
The Shockers answered right back and scored one run off of two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Erin Carney picked up her second hit of the game with a single to left field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored her second run of the game when Rachel Milnark singled to right field for an RBI. The Carney run made the score 6-2 at the end of the half inning.
The Red Raiders led off the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles to score two runs and make the score 8-2 in favor of Texas Tech. Tongate hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the Red Raider lead out to 9-2.
The game was ended after five innings of play as the Red Raiders scored one run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-2.
The Shockers return to action next weekend for their final non-conference tournament of the season. They travel to Denton, Texas to take part in the North Texas Invitational. Wichita State takes on Ole Miss on Fri., March 4th at 10:00 a.m.
