SANTA BARBARA,Calif.- After being delayed on Friday night due to the lack of daylight, the Shockers resumed play Saturday morning and fell, 4-3, to the Gauchos of UC-Santa Barbara.
Hayley Temple led the Shockers with two hits in three at bats. Brittney Osborn drove in two runs for WSU.
UC-Santa Barbara took an early lead in the first inning scoring two runs off of one hit and one error. The Shockers took some momentum going into the bottom of the second inning after Heather Gerritse caught Brooke Putich trying to steal. Holy Eckert led off with a walk and Hayley Temple followed that up right up with a bunt single. With two outs and Eckert on third and Temple on second, Brittney Osborn doubled up the middle to score both runs. The score was tied at 2-2 at the end of two innings.
After giving up two runs in the first inning, sophomore pitcher, Katie Armagost regained her composure on the mound. She held the Gauchos scoreless for four straight innings and recorded six strikeouts. UCSB loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning, and Keilari Jennings scored off of a Depompa hit.
The game against UCSB was called by the umpires in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the lack of daylight. At the time of the decision, the Gauchos were leading the Shockers, 3-2.
After resuming play Saturday morning, the Shockers tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Holly Eckert doubled to left center with two outs in the inning, and Hayley Temple brought her home with a double down the left field line.
The Gauchos answered right back in the top of the seventh and scored one run to take a 4-3 lead.
The Shockers continue action in the Gaucho Classic as they play UC-Santa Barbara for the second time with play starting approximately at 11:00 a.m. Central Standard time.
