WICHITA, Kan. -- Shocker junior Emily Adney picked up 11 kills, as well as 13 digs and two service aces as Wichita State defeated the visiting Drake Bulldogs, 3-0, Friday in front of 2,217 at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers improved to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play, winning by scores of, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-15. Drake fell to 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Shocker sophomore Sam Sanders led Wichita State with 12 kills and senior Sarah Waldorf led with 14 digs. Senior Mary Elizabeth Hooper added 30 assists and senior Camri Zwiesler had two service aces Friday for the Shockers.
The Bulldogs took an early 5-3 lead in the first set and later tied the set, 12-12. The Shockers answered with a 7-1 run to build up a lead they held the remainder of the set. Adney finished the first set with five kills.
In the second set, consecutive kills by Ashley Andrade, Adney, Elizabeth Field and Sanders pushed the Shockers to a 17-9 lead. A Drake attack error pushed the Shockers ahead, 18-9. Adney picked up six digs in the set.
Wichita State took a 5-1 lead early in the third set. Later in the set, three-straight points by the Shockers on back-to-back kills from Sanders and an Andrade service ace put Wichita State ahead, 15-6. A kill by Field closed the set and sealed the win.
The Shockers next play Creighton for the first time this season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Charles Koch Arena.
