WICHITA, Kan. - The Portland Pilots defeated the Wichita State Shockers 3-1 on Saturday night in the championship match of the 2010 SpringHill Suites Shocker Classic in front of 1,846 fans at Charles Koch Arena.  The Pilots won 17-25, 26-24, 25-23 and 25-22.

Kati Hronek led the Pilots with 17 kills and added 4 digs.  Ariel Usher had 12 kills and 13 digs for the Pilots.  Madison Smith finished with a match-high 42 assists and added 4 kills and 6 digs.

Camri Zweisler led the Shockers with 12 kills and finished with 13 digs.  Sarah Waldorf led the Shockers with 23 assists.

The Pilots took an early 3-0 lead in the first set, but the Shockers came back to tie it at six on a kill by Elizabeth Field.  WSU took its first lead of the set at 7-6 with a block by Field and Alysa Heath, but the Pilots answered to go back in front 10-8.   A service ace by Sarah Waldorf tied the score at 13 and the Shockers took off after that grabbing a 19-14 lead after a Pilot hitting error.  Back-to-back aces from Chelsey Feekin increased the lead to 21-14 and WSU won the set 25-17 on another kill by Field.

The second set went back-and-forth until the Pilots took a 14-12 lead after a kill from Ariel Usher.  UP increased the lead to 16-12 with a kill from Katie Hronek before the Shockers cut the lead to 24-21 on a kill by Sarah McGee.  A Sam Sanders kill pulled WSU within 24-22 and back-to-back UP hitting errors tied the score at 24.  An Usher kill gave UP a 25-24 lead and a WSU hitting error gave the Pilots a 26-24 win.

Kills from Amanda Backes and Sanders gave the Shocks an early 6-5 lead in the third set, but the two teams traded points after that until UP took a 16-13 advantage.   A kill by Field cut the lead to 19-17 and back-to-back Shocker blocks tied the score at 20.  The Pilots responded to go back in front 23-21 and held on to win 25-23.

UP grabbed an early 9-6 lead in the fourth set and increased it to 13-9 on a kill by Rachel Femling.  The Pilots continued to be in control of the set until a kill by Backes pulled WSU to within 21-18.  A Zwiesler kill tied the score at 21 and a Field kill gave the Shocks the lead at 22-21.  Back-to-back Pilot kills gave them the advantage at 23-22 and they held on to win 25-22. 

The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 10 against Houston in the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah.
