Box Score NORMAN, Okla. - Wichita State dropped a five-set decision to
Miami, Fla., at the Nike Invitational.
The Hurricanes won by scores of 19-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22 and 15-10.
Amanda Backes led the Shockers with 13 kills, while Camri
Zwiesler added 12 kills and 15 digs.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper had a team-high 25 assists and Sarah Waldorf had
26 digs.
Miami jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set, but the
Shockers tied it at nine on a kill by Emily Adney. WSU scored six-straight points to go up 17-12
and then cruised to the 25-19 win.
The teams raced out to a 5-5 tie in the second set, but
Miami took control after that and scored five-straight to go up 15-9. The Shockers pulled to within four at 17-13
with a kill by Elizabeth Field, but could get no closer as the Hurricanes won
the set 25-17.
The third set went back-and-forth early before back-to-back
kills by Camri Zwiesler and Sam Sanders put the Shockers up 15-13. WSU then went on a 4-1 run to take a 19-14
advantage and a service ace by Sarah Waldorf made the score 23-18. The Shockers finished off the set with a
Miami service error to win 25-19.
The two teams traded points throughout the fourth set as the
biggest lead of the set was three points by Miami at 11-8 and 12-9. After falling behind 22-20, the Shockers tied
it at 22 on a kill by Zwiesler and a Hurricane hitting error, but Miami closed
out the set with three-straight points to win 25-22.
The Shockers started off strong in the fifth set and took an
8-5 lead on a kill by Amanda Backes.
Miami then rallied and finished the set on a 10-2 run to win 15-10.
WSU is next in action later today at 5 p.m. against
UT-Arlington.
