Box Score OMAHA, Neb. - Wichita State scored three runs in the ninth
to defeat Creighton 8-7 and sweep the three-game series.
Preston Springer went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles,
while Johnny Coy went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Travis Bennett went 2-for-3 with
two RBI.
Reliever Logan Hoch earned the win. He pitched 2.2 shutout innings and allowed
just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the second inning. Johnny Coy led off the inning with an infield
single and scored on a double to left field from Travis Bennett. Bennett moved to third on a balk and scored
on a triple from Bret Bascue. Erik
Harbutz drove in Bascue with a double to left field and Will Baez's two-out
single scored Harbutz to give WSU a 4-0 lead.
CU's Carson Vitale led off the second inning with a home run
and the Jays added another run in the inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
WSU got one run back in the third. Preston Springer led off with a double to
left-center, advanced to third on a groundout by Coy and scored on a groundout
by Bennett to give WSU a 5-2 lead.
The Jays scored five in the seventh to go in front 7-5, but
the Shockers answered with three runs in the ninth to take an 8-7 lead. Tyler Grimes and Chris O'Brien led off the
inning with back-to-back singles and Springer drove in Grimes and Coy drove in
O'Brien to tie the game at seven. The
Shockers took the lead 8-7 when Springer scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., May 14 when they
host Missouri State at 7 p.m.
