DES MOINES, Iowa- Lauren Larson's RBI single in the eight capped a back-and-forth game and gave No. 3 Creighton (34-21) a 5-4 win over No. 7 Wichita State (22-31) in Missouri Valley Conference Tournament action at Buel Field.
Both teams got base hits from their leadoff hitters as Lindsie Mitts and Creighton's Michelle Koch each singled in the first. However, neither team was able to plate the runners.
The Shockers hit the scoreboard first, touching up CU starter Tara Oltman for two unearned runs. Jamie Hull got the rally started with a one-out bloop double down the right field line. Hayley Temple followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners.
Temple stole second, her second swipe of the season, while a strikeout and walk to Lauren Coleman loaded the bases with two down. Mitts hit a slow roller between first and second, where Renae Sinkler tossed to Oltman covering first. Though Oltman beat Mitts to the bag, she dropped the ball before stepping on first.
The error allowed Hull and Temple to score for a 2-0 WSU lead. Oltman escaped further damage with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Bluejays tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. Michelle Graner led off the inning with a single deep to short and scored on a home run to right by Sara Loeffelholz.
But the Shockers regained the lead in the fifth, thanks to a lead off walk and an error. Lauren Coleman reached on her second walk of the game to start the inning and moved to second on Mitts' second hit of the game.
After a line out to third, Graner tried to double-off Mitts at first and threw the ball away to allow Coleman to reach third. She scored on Kiersten Dixon's sacrifice fly to right.
The Bluejays answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer from Sinkler to tie the game, 3-3.
In the sixth, Temple kept the back-and-forth battle going with her third home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole for a 4-3 lead. The shot was Temple's second off of Oltman this season, after hitting a home run off the CU ace during the regular-season series in Wichita.
Once again, CU tied the game thanks to the long ball. This time it was Lauren Larson with a solo home run to left center to tie the game for third time.
The Shockers threatened in the top of the seventh with a two-out double from Heather Gerritse, but WSU couldn't get a run across. In the bottom half of the inning, Kolb retired the Jays in order to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, Kolb intentionally walked Sinkler and Graner. With one out, Larson delivered with a single up the middle to score Sinkler and take the 5-4 win.
Kolb took the loss for WSU, going 7.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Offensively, Temple led the Shockers going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
With the loss, WSU concludes its season at 22-31.
