Shook Powers Shocks to Series Win

4/3/2010 2:39:00 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa- Sammie Shook had two doubles and a career-high three RBI to help Wichita State (11-18, 2-5) to a 6-1 and series win against Drake (20-10, 3-3) Saturday afternoon at Buel Field.

After scoring just four runs in their previous five Missouri Valley Conference games, the Shockers tagged DU pitcher Jenna DeLong for five runs in the first inning. Lindsie Mitts and Kersti Rowan led off the inning with hits while Heather Gerritse loaded the bases with a fielder's choice.

Kiersten Dixon drove in a pair of runs with a blast off of the left field wall. Hayley Temple walked to load the bases again. A force out followed by a throwing error by catcher Erin Mollohan allowed Dixon to score for a 3-0 lead.

Shook then lined a double off the wall in right-center to drive in two more runs to push the lead to 5-0. Shook's blast chased DeLong from the game as DU turned to Brynne Dordel for the final out of the inning.

Elena Leon put the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to right field.

Kolb danced around some trouble in the second inning after a leadoff double and an error put two runners on base with no outs. After a sacrifice moved the runners up 60-feet to second and third, Kolb got Molly McClelland and Kelsey Kahler to strikeout to end the inning.

Shook gave Kolb a five-run lead once again in the top of the third inning. Dixon led off the inning with a single just past Carrie Hatfield at third and moved to scoring position at second after a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Shook lined a double off the right field wall to collect her third RBI of the game, extending the lead to 6-1.

Kolb worked herself in and out of another jam in the third, loading the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. But the sophomore got Lindsey Vande Wall to fly out to right to end the threat.

The sophomore from Chelsea, Okla., settled down and at one point retired eight-straight DU batters.

DU led off the seventh with a walk but couldn't turn the free pass into a run as Kolb recorded her second win in as many days with eight strikeouts and just three hits allowed.

Along with Shook, Dixon went 3 for 4 with two RBI on the day, helping WSU to its first MVC series win.

The Shockers will travel to Tulsa for a doubleheader against the Golden Hurricane on Tue., April 6, starting at 4 p.m.
