Box Score WICHITA -- San Jose State scored two runs in the top of the eighth as the Spartans were able to hold off a late charge by the Wichita State University baseball team, defeating the Shockers 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Shockers to 25-15 on the year while San Jose State is now 15-23.
Tyler Grimes was 2-for-2 with two RBI for Wichita State while Will Baez delivered a pinch-hit double in the sixth inning and later came around to score.
Corey Valine and Kerry Jenkins each had an RBI for SJSU.
John Austin picked up the win in relief for the Spartans, going 5.2 innings and allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out five.
San Jose State, as they had done throughout the three-game series, jumped on the board first as the Spartans put two runs up in the first inning. Karson Klauer led off with a base hit and moved to second on a stolen base. The Spartan second baseman scored on an RBI single by Valine with Jenkins adding an RBI groundout in the inning to give the visiting team a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers cut into the early deficit in the bottom of the second as a Chris O'Brien walk was followed by a Johnny Coy double to put runners at second and third with one out. Travis Bennett hit a deep drive to left-field, scoring O'Brien with the sacrifice fly.
Wichita State looked to take control of the game in the bottom of the sixth as WSU scored twice thanks to an RBI double by Grimes that drove in Bret Bascue and Baez.
The Shockers looked to cruise through the eighth after a lead-off single was negated by a double-play. A single, back-to-back walks and a WSU error led to two runners coming across home plate to make the score 4-3 in favor of San Jose State.
Austin was able to hold off the Shockers from there, getting the final six outs.
Coy was 2-for-4 from the plate. Bascue had a hit and a run scored in three at-bats.
Wichita State will now host the University of Kansas on Tuesday, Apr. 27, for a 7 p.m., non-conference game.
