Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville took game one of a three-game
Missouri Valley Conference series with Wichita State by a score of 11-3.
Nate Goro went 2-for-3 for the Shockers with an RBI, while
Preston Springer went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Starter Jordan Cooper took the loss to fall to 3-1 on the year.
The Aces jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in
the second inning off of Jordan Cooper.
A one-out double by Tom Heithoff drove in Nate Smith who reached on a
walk. Cooper balked Heithoff to third
and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Pascoe to give UE a 2-0 lead.
UE tacked on two more in the third with three singles, an
error and a passed ball to claim a 4-0 advantage.
The Shockers cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the
fifth. Johnny Coy led off with a double
and scored on a single up the middle by Nate Goro. Goro advanced to second on a wild pitch and
to third on a ground out with one out, but was left stranded with back-to-back
Shocker strikeouts.
The Aces answered in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff
home run from Trentt Copeland. Smith
followed with a single to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a
wild pitch. After a walk to Heithoff,
Pascoe bunted to first base to drive in Smith to put the Aces up 6-1. A walk by Cooper put runners at first and
second, but Chance Sossamon came in from the bullpen to get the final two outs.
A two-out single by Heithoff added another run on the board
for the Aces in the sixth for a 7-1 advantage.
Travis Bennett led off the seventh with a walk and a one-out
walk to Goro advanced him to second.
Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Bennett scored on a sacrifice
fly by Tyler Grimes to cut the lead to 7-2.
The Aces scored two more in the seventh, while the Shockers
added a run in the eighth. Bennett
doubled in Preston Springer who reached base on an error by the UE shortstop.
UE scored two more in the eighth to go up 11-3, but the Shockers
closed out the game with three in the ninth for the final of 11-6.
The Shockers take on the Aces in game two of the series on
Sat., April 3 at 2 p.m.
