WACO - Wichita State unloaded on the Sugar Bears in the Saturday morning game, 9-1, before coming up short against the University of Texas at Arlington, 3-1, on the second day of the QTI/Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor University.
Game One: Wichita State 9 - Central Arkansas 1
Led by senior center fielder Lindsie Mitts' three-hit game to tie her career high, the Shockers got to work quickly on Saturday morning. Back-to-back hits sparked a two-run top of the first to get the Shockers up and running.
Senior second baseman Kara L'Huillier's single put her on base with junior right fielder Kiersten Dixon already aboard. An RBI single for sophomore catcher Heather Gerritse drove in Dixon and first baseman Jamie Hull's sacrfice fly plated L'Huillier to give the Shocks the early 2-0 lead.
After Shocker starter Kasha Kolb worked out of a Sugar Bear threat, her offense gave her a little more cushion in the top of the fifth. Designated player Brittany Osborn did her job with a lead off single to right center before moving to second on a well-placed Lauren Coleman sacrifice bunt. Two-straight singles moved and scored her while L'Huillier's sacrifice fly drove in the second of a two-run inning, building the lead, 4-0.
Wichita State took advantage of Central Arkansas' miscues in the next inning to break the game open. The Shockers answered a Sugar Bear run in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run rally. Osborn's double highlighted the rally in which two runs crossed by way of wild pitches and the third by an errant throw.
By the top of the seventh, the Shocker bats were red hot. The Shockers cranked out three hits and a walk to lead off the inning. Hull's RBI rocket to left field highlighted the Shocks' last scoring rally of the game. Kolb finished her complete game in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win, 9-1.
Game Two: Wichita State 1 - Texas-Arlington 3
A three-hit, complete game from starter Teri Lyles led the Mavericks of Texas-Arlington past the Shockers to wrap up day two of the QTI/Getterman Invitational.
The Mavericks climbed on top first by loading the bases against Shocker starter Katie Armagost. A heads up play by Mitts and Gerritse resulted in an inning-ending double play to end the threat down 1-0. Although Armagost and the Shockers kept the game close, a two-run third inning eventually clinched the game for the Mavericks.
Freshman shortstop Sammie Shook's base knock up the middle drove Mitts home in the bottom of the fifth as the Shockers' bats offensive power emerged. Unfortunately for the Shockers, the bats never hit another surge and UTA took the game, 3-1.
