WICHITA, Kan.- The
Wichita State Shockers placed four in double figures helping them to a 68-50
victory over Nicholls State in front of a crowd of 10,430 at Charles Koch Arena
Friday night.
Toure' Murry led the Shockers with 13 points and three
assists. J.T. Durley (12 points),
Graham Hatch (11 points), and Aaron Ellis (10 points) also finished in double
figures for WSU. Ellis finished
the game one board shy of a double-double, leading the Shocks with 9 rebounds.
Nicholls State was led in scoring by Anatoly Bose, who
finished the game with 26 points on 5-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. Kellan Carter led the Colonels on the
boards with seven rebounds.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead behind eight
straight points from Durley.
Durley jumped right out of the gate with a jumper from the elbow and
then followed that up with a three-point play off of a rebound put-back. A three-pointer from the left wing at the
16:35 mark gave WSU an 8-0 lead and Durley 1,002 career points. He became the 39th Shocker
to reach 1,000 points.
Kenny Franklin Jr. silenced the Shocker crowd hitting the
first field goal for the Colonels with 14:51 left in the first half, WSU up
9-5. The Shocks extended the lead
to 15-7 scoring six straight points with a rebound put-back from Graham Hatch,
a turn around jumper from Ellis, and two free throws from Durley.
Wichita State went on another 6-0 run going into the
eight-minute media timeout.
Back-to-back layups from Ellis and Ben Smith and a shot down low from
Garrett Stutz gave the Shox a 21-12. Carter ended the run with a drive to the basket bringing the
Colonels back within seven, WSU up 21-14.
A steal and a fast-break layup from Dantrell Thomas with a
little over four minutes left in the first half brought the Shocker lead down
to 21-16. A Hatch 3-pointer right
out of the media timeout pushed the WSU lead out to 24-16. Toure' Murry gave the Shockers their
first double digit lead of the game, 27-17, with a sweeping drive from the left
side of the basket with a little over two minutes remaining in the first half.
Two free throws from Murry, an old fashioned three point
play from Hatch, and a tip-in from Ellis gave the Shockers a 34-19 lead going
into half time. The Shocks were
led by Durley with 10 first half points on 3-for-5 shooting from the
field. Ellis led the Shockers on
the boards with five first half rebounds.
Lock-down first half defense held the Colonels leading scorer,
Anatoly Bose, to two field goals.
Bose led Nicholls State with seven points at half time. Bose came into the game averaging 25.3
points per game.
Wichita State continued its domination on the boards
outrebounding the Colonels, 22-9, in the first half.
Bose came out of the half firing, hitting his first two
shots from behind the arc less than a minute into the second half cutting the
Shocker lead to 34-25. Murry stopped the run with a floater in the lane, but
Bose answered right back with his third three in the second half, WSU up
36-28. Wichita State pushed the
lead back into double digits, 44-32, with a basket down low from Durley and a
fast-break dunk from David Kyles.
Bose scored 11 of the Colonels first 15 points in the second
half turning his seven first half points into 18 in an instant.
After back-and-forth action, a post up on the block from
Stutz gave the Shockers a 46-34 lead with 13:04 left in the game. Another basket from Stutz inside pushed
the Shockers ahead 50-34. Bose cut
the lead down to 10 with his fourth three-pointer of the half, but Kyles
answered right back with a three of his own putting WSU ahead 53-40.
With 4:28 left in the second half, a three-point play from
Murry gave the Shockers a 60-42 lead over the Colonels. Bose added three more points to his
total, this time the old fashioned way, cutting the Shocker lead to 62-49. Smith answered right back with a
3-pointer moving the lead to 65-49.
The Shockers never looked back the rest of the half.
The Shockers outrebounded their seventh opponent of the
season, edging the Colonels on the boards, 39-23.
The Shockers will host Alabama A&M of the Southwestern
Conference on Mon., Dec. 13 with tip-off set for 7:05 p.m.
