Shocks Pick Up Second MVC Victory, 81-69

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State men's basketball team (13-2, 2-1 MVC) got 19 points from J.T.Durley as the Shocks won their second straight with a 81-69 win over Bradley (6-7, 1-2 MVC) Sunday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd inside Charles Koch Arena.

Bradley's Sam Maniscalo led all players with 20 points, while Chris Roberts chipped in 18. Durley led a total of five Shockers in double figures including Toure' Murry (15 points), Clevin Hannah (12 points) while Graham Hatch and Gabe Blair each added 11.

The Shockers made 15-of-17 shots at the free-throw line in the second half, and connected on 85-percent of their shots at the stripe on the afternoon.

Back to Back threes to open the second half by Hannah and Durley pushed WSU to its largest lead of the game, 45-38, before Durley added two free throws for a nine point lead with 17:41 in the second half.

Ellis added layup from Hannah at 17:04 for a 49-38 double-digit Shocker lead before Maniscalco's trey at 16:32 cut it back to eight.

WSU kept the lead constant over the next five minutes to take a 55-45 lead into the 11:56 media timeout.

A Stutz layup pushed the lead the 13 before two McCain free throws and a Maniscalco break away layup cut the lead to nine at 9:55.

Wichita State kept the Braves at bay to take a 65-54 lead into the 7:03 media timeout, but BU cut it back to nine again on another Maniscalco layup.

The Shockers maintained the lead heading into the 3:53 timeout at 70-60. Murry's homerun floor-length pass to Hatch for a layup pushed the lead back to 72-61. Bradley answered with a Warren trey at 3:25 to cut the lead to eight, 72-64.

It was as close as the Braves would get, as WSU extended the lead to double digits again with a Gabe Blair basket at the 2:43 mark and never let the lead slip to single digits again the rest of the afternoon.

The Shockers shot 54.5-percent in the second half to finish with a 51.9-percent effort on the day. WSU's defense held Bradley to 37-percent shooting in the second frame, including a 3-for-12 effort from the arc.

To open the game, the two teams battled back and fourth with eight lead changes through the first 16 minutes of the first half for a 31-all tie at the 3:26 mark.

Blair broke open the tie with a turnaround jumper at the 3:12 mark but BU answered with a Eastman layup. A Shocker turnover then gave bradley the ball to take a 35-33 lead with 2:18 left in the first intermission.

A Hannah three-ball put the Shocker back up 36-35, but a trey by the Braves' Roberts put BU back in front 38-36 at the 1:39 mark.

A Murry three from the corner gave WSU the lead back, 39-38, at the 40 second mark coming out of a WSU timeout. A stout Shocker defense held off the Braves over the final 40 seconds for the halftime lead.

WSU is next in action when the Shockers travel to Missouri State on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the game will air live on Kansas 22.
