Shocks Drop Game at Drake, 78-64

Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa - Fifteen second-half points from sophomore guard Toure' Murry couldn't stop the red hot Drake Bulldogs (10-11, 5-4) from winning their fifth straight as they defeated the Shockers at the Drake Knapp Center on Saturday afternoon, 78-64.

The Shockers (17-4, 6-3) were never able to get into rhythm or knock the Bulldogs (10-11, 5-4) out of theirs in WSU's first conference return game of the season. The game also marked the first in which the Shockers allowed an opponent to shoot above 50-percent this season.

Three Shockers ended their day in double figures with senior point guard Clevin Hannah leading the charge with 19 points, 15 coming from three-point range. Junior forward JT Durley added 16, including two three-pointers and Murry scored 15 points - all in the second half.

The home team saw four players into double digits. Guard Josh Young's 20 points led all scorers and included a flawless 11-for-11 performance on the line. Seth VanDeest chipped in 17 points while Ryan Wedel and Adam Templeton recorded 13.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 7-0 run while the Shockers surrendered three quick turnovers. Hannah connected on a three to try and reverse the trend of the game's opening minutes.

Drake would not allow it, sparking for another 7-0 run using an Adam Templeton three and Josh Young's fast break layup to take a 14-3 lead. By the second media timeout, the Bulldogs had forced nine Shocker turnovers in less than nine minutes.

A Garrett Stutz dunk did little to offset the Bulldogs' mentality as VanDeest knocked down a three and another jumper in back-to-back possessions to open up the first half lead, 21-5. Drake's foul trouble, however, emerged as the first positive for the Shockers as they found themselves in the bonus with nearly eight minutes remaining in the half.

Shooting just 2-for-12 in the game's opening 14 minutes, WSU continued to search for an answer on the offensive end. Sophomore guard David Kyles provided the first bout of stability, driving for a layup before dishing out to junior guard Graham Hatch for the Shockers' second three of the game.

Now loosened up, the Shocker offense started rolling - momentarily. Durley knocked down a layup of his own and Hannah hit his second three of the game amidst a 16-7 Shocker run. Kyles converted Hannah's steal into a dunk, deeply cutting into the Bulldog lead, 28-21.

Drake refused to give the visiting team a break, rallying for a 6-0 run on four-straight free throws and Templeton's drive to the bucket with less than a minute and a half remaining in the half. Durley hit a three in the Shocks' final possession of the half to head into the break with their largest halftime deficit of the season, 36-24.

The Bulldogs stuck to their game plan in the second half, as Young drove to the basket for a layup and one in the first 30 seconds of the half. Junior guard Ryan Wedel took advantage of a 2-on-1 fast break with a layup finish in response to a three from Hannah to hold the lead, 43-29.

Collecting all the Shockers' second-half points through the first media timeout, Hannah fired off another three to again narrow his team's deficit, 43-32, to prompt a timeout call from Drake coach Mark Phelps.

Drake came out of the timeout with two costly threes to push the lead to 15. The threes the Bulldogs missed in a 2-for-22 three-point performance when they traveled to Wichita were negated in Drake Knapp Center. Guard Aaron Hawley knocked his first down to raise the Bulldogs' three-point accuracy to 55 percent. They would finish the game 7-for-13.

Making up for a missed layup opportunity in the previous possession, Durley drained a three from the top of the key to slice the deficit to eight, 54-46.

Despite the Shockers closing the discrepancy in shooting percentage, Drake slowed to 51-percent to the Shockers' raised to 39-percent, the Shockers were plagued by the double bonus. With six minutes to play, Drake held a noticeable advantage in trips to the line. In 19 attempts, the Bulldogs hit 15 while the Shockers had just nine chances to make seven.

Making no excuses, Murry continued his second-half surge. His made three just inside the five-minute mark brought the Shocks within seven once again. Kyles stepped up for a pair of clutch free throws to bring the Shocks within five for the first time in the half.

Four-straight free throws provided cushion for Drake as it had all afternoon, extending the lead to nine. Playing as a legitimate leader, Murry's drive to the basket resulted in a layup and one and just a six-point Bulldog lead, 66-60. Drake's next possession may have clinched the game as a tough call on Murry put the Shocker lead on the bench with five fouls. Hannah did his best to pick up for Murry's absence, draining a three to again bring the Shocks within five.

Hannah's effort couldn't hold off what Drake had done all day. Six more Bulldog free throws stretched the lead beyond reach as the Shockers took the 78-64 loss.

The Shockers return home to play host to the Redbirds of Illinois State on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Charles Koch Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
