OMAHA, Neb. - The Wichita State women's tennis team picked up its 20th win Saturday, advancing to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship match with a 4-0 win over Illinois State at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The Shockers faced little resistance from the Redbirds in doubles play, dropping just four combined games in the two doubles matches that were completed. WSU's No. 1 duo of Anna Egorova and Lutfiana Budiharto cruised to an 8-1 win over Illinois State's Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt, while Stephanie Dalmacio and Florentina Hanisch won the doubles point for WSU with an 8-3 win over Natalia Lech and Tanja Hrovatic in the No. 2 match. The No. 3 match between WSU's Lenore Lazaroiu and Torrie Browning and Illinois State's Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters was unfinished as the Shockers had already won the doubles point.
Wichita State carried its momentum into singles play, where the Shockers dropped just six games over the three singles matches that were completed. Stephanie Dalmacio opened singles play by making quick work of Franziska Steinhardt in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 4 match. Lutfiana Budiharto followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Natalia Lech in the No. 2 match, and Anna Egorova won the match for the Shockers with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Julia Zubkova in the No. 1 match.
"I think our girls competed very well today," Assistant Women's Coach Courtney Steinbock said. "We were very focused on the task at hand and our goal of winning this match. We are looking forward to the challenge of keeping our season going with a win tomorrow and an opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament."
The Shockers will face the winner of Friday's second semifinal match between Southern Illinois and Northern Iowa in Sunday's MVC Championship match.
