OMAHA, Neb. - Both Wichita State tennis teams picked up sweeps in the opening rounds of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, which began Friday at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha's Tranquility Park.

The top-seeded Shocker women started with a 4-0 win over eighth-seeded Creighton, while the men concluded the twinbill sweep with a 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Indiana State. In an attempt to speed up the tournament, each dual was played in a first-to-four format.

The Shocker women held off a doubles upset bid from arch-rival Creighton in their first match of the tournament. In a match that started 30 minutes after the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, WSU's No. 3 duo of Anna Egorova and Laryssa Ferreira notched WSU's first win of the doubles competition, making quick work of Creighton's Kelsey Schmidt and Lauren Mastro, 8-2. The No. 2 Shocker tandem of Torrie Browning and Lenore Lazaroiu followed with an 8-4 win over Creighton's sister act of Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader, and the No. 1 doubles match between WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio and Florentina Hanisch and Creighton's Tess Reddin and Nicole Nakaoka was unfinished, deadlocked at 7-7.

Singles play was relatively smooth sailing for the Shockers. Stephanie Dalmacio picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nicole Nakaoka in the No. 3 match. Florentina Hanisch followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mary Pat McMullan in the No. 5 match, while Lenore Lazaroiu won the match for the Shockers with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Creighton's Kelsey Schmidt.

On the men's side, the Shockers put together one of their most dominant performances of the season for a 5-0 rout of Indiana State. WSU dropped just three games in a doubles sweep, and sealed the deal with three-straight singles wins to ensure the Shocker shutout. The two matches that would clench the match concluded nearly simultaneously, so they were both awarded as Shocker wins, which led to the 5-0 score.

On the doubles ledger, David Cavalcanti and Jonathan Obrist had no trouble with Indiana State's Milos Pavlovic and Blake Douglas, earning an 8-0 shutout in the No. 3 mamtch. WSU's Vlad Marinescu and Adrian Chermaci clenched the doubles point with an 8-3 triumph over Sycamore foes Joshua Smith and Jon Sigurdson, leaving the No. 2 match unfinished.

It was more smooth sailing for Wichita State in singles play. Adrian Chermaci picked up a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set series from Indiana State's Mpiloenhle Migogo to win the No. 2 match. David Cavalcanti followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over ISU's Milos Pavlovic, while Matt Teivans downed Michael Wenham in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-0. Scott McCormick rounded out the Shocker scorecard with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Blake Douglas in the No. 6 match.

Both squads continue their quests for Valley championships Saturday. The WSU women will take on Illinois State in an 11 a.m. semi-final match, while the men take on Southern Illinois in a match slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. Results of both matches will be available on goshockers.com as they become available.
