WICHITA - Facing its second ranked opponent in as many days, the Wichita State women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 24 SMU Sunday morning at Genesis Health Club.
A slow start in doubles play set the tone for the match. The Mustangs picked up the early momentum by winning the doubles point in a three-match sweep of the Shockers, winning each doubles match by identical scores of 8-4. The 42nd-ranked SMU doubles tandem of Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova downed WSU's
Anna Egorova and
Stephanie Dalmacio in the No. 1 match, while the 60th-ranked Mustangs doubles duo of Natalia Bubien and Pavi Francis defeated
Lenore Lazaroiu and
Lutfiana Budiharto in the No. 2 match. SMU's Nicole Briceno and Kseniia Tokarieva completed the sweep with a win over WSU's
Florentina Hanisch and
Torrie Browning in the No. 3 match.
The Mustangs carried that momentum into singles play as well. Tokarieva swept Hanisch in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-0 to give SMU a 2-0 lead in the dual. Francis followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dalmacio in the No. 4 match, and Bubien secured the Mustang win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Browning in the No. 3 match.
Due to time constraints and limited court availability, the Nos. 1, 4 and 5 matches went unfinished. Egorova led 57th-ranked Lesniak 6-4, 5-4 in the No. 1 match when the dual was called.
Wichita State will return to action next weekend when it hosts Illinois State, Indiana State and Bradley.
