WICHITA - Four Shocks registered double digits and 10 Shockers scored as Wichita State (6-1) took care of business against Texas Southern, winning its fourth straight on Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena, 74-43.
WSU used a nearly 60-percent accuracy mark from the floor in the second half to turn a 13-point halftime lead into a 31-point victory. Defensively the home team stepped up, as well, grabbing 11 steals and converting 24 Tiger turnovers into 30 points.
Sophomore center Garrett Stutz led the Shockers with 14 points. Fellow sophomore David Kyles, junior forward J.T. Durley and senior point guard Clevin Hannah each added 10. Sophmore guard Toure' Murry led all rebounders with nine boards.
Texas Southern was led by senior guard DeAndre Hall who tallied 14 points on a 6-for-8 shooting night.
The Tigers put four on the board in the first minute of play using a quick bucket and a pair of free throws after guard Justin Ray drew the foul driving through the lane.
The Shockers answered - loudly - with a 26-6 run in the following 15 minutes.
Junior guard Graham Hatch responded with a three to spark the Shocker offense. Senior point guard Clevin Hannah did the same, sparking a 9-0 run, highlighted by a tip-in from sophomore center Garrett Stutz to push the Shocker lead to 12-6.
A defensive battled ensued for the next several minutes, as the Shockers swiped four steals and shook Texas Southern for eight turnovers just midway through the opening half. As the home team held the Tigers to a 33-percent shooting mark, its offense erupted. The crowd hit a season-high decibel level when sophomore guard David Kyles converted a Toure' Murry steal into a dunk on his end of the floor.
Not even two minutes later, Kyles hit a fade away jumper to beat the shot clock, igniting another roar from the crowd as the Shockers started pulling away early, 22-10.
While the Shockers held the Tigers scoreless for nearly six and a half minutes, they extended their lead by spreading the wealth. All but one of the nine Shockers who saw time in the first half scored.
Although Texas Southern rallied for five-straight points with less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Shocks took a 28-15 lead into the break.
Both teams came out gunning in the second half, knocking down a combined 8-for-11 from the floor before the first media timeout.
Kyles fired up the crowd again when he slammed home a dunk following a missed three to give the Shockers the 34-19 advantage two minutes into the second half. Durley provided plenty of crowd pleasers of his own. A pair of buckets were sandwiched around Hannah's four consecutive free throws after two technical fouls were assessed to the visiting team to push the Shocker lead to 44-23 with 15 minutes remaining.
Despite shooting nearly 67 percent midway through the second half, the Tigers' turnover count allowed the Shockers to build a 25-point lead. WSU had forced 20 Texas Southern turnovers with 11 minutes to play. The Tigers gave up 24 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Shocker offense continued to surge forward. Freshman guard Demetric Williams drained a three to give the Shockers their largest lead of the night, 57-29.
The Tigers did their best to rally when Ray caught fire for six-straight points during a 7-2 TSU run, but with less than seven minutes remaining the Shocks were already out of reach.
The 15-5 Shocker run capped by a steal-turned-Stutz dunk down the stretch negated any last minute effort the Tigers brought as the night ended in the Shockers' favor, 74-43.
The Shockers cap off a three-game homestand on Saturday when they play host to South Carolina Upstate at 7:05 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena.
