WICHITA -- Wichita State fought off a late second-half rally from No. 16 Texas Tech Saturday to upset the undefeated Red Raiders 85-83 at Charles Koch Arena.
A sell-out crowd of 10,506 watched the Shockers hit all 12 of their final 12 free-throw attempts to stay in front of Texas Tech, which shot 70 percent from the field in the second half.
The victory extended the Shockers' winning streak to eight games and record to 10-1 on the season. Texas Tech fell to 9-1 overall with its first loss of the season.
Senior guard Clevin Hannah led the Shockers with a season-high 24 points. JT Durley, a junior forward, added a career-high 20 points for Wichita State, and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Shockers shot 42.6 percent for the game and 82.4 from the free-throw line overall.
Both teams struggled at the game's start. The Red Raiders missed their first six shots and the Shockers their first three field goal attempts. The game remained scoreless until Durley's free-throws at the 15:59 mark of the first half. Texas Tech's D'walyn Roberts posted the game's first field goal at the 15:49 mark.
Wichita State used a 10-0 run in the final 4:14 -- fueled by 3-pointers from Durley and Hannah -- to build up a 13-point lead and bring Shocker fans to their feet.
The Shockers led 35-21 at halftime, holding the Red Raiders to 8-of-31 shooting for 25.8 percent in the opening period, and 0-for-6 from behind the 3-point line. Durley's 14 points led all scorers in the half.
Texas Tech chipped away at the Shockers' lead with hot shooting throughout the second half -- making 7 of 10 3-pointers in the half -- and eventually took a four-point lead with 5:21 remaining in the game.
Back to back 3-pointers from Hannah regained the Shockers' lead 64-61 with 4:37 left. Wichita State went on to post a 13-2 run during the stretch and extend to a seven point lead with 3 minutes left.
The Red Raiders made four 3-pointers in the final 55 seconds to threaten.
No. 16 Texas Tech is the highest ranked opponent the Shockers have played in Wichita since No. 12 Creighton in 2002-03, a game which the Shockers won 90-74. Mike Singletary paced the Red Raiders with 24 points.
Wichita State next hosts North Dakota State at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Charles Koch Arena to conclude a three-game home stand.
