KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Sprint Center full of a battling sea of black and gold ended in the Shockers' favor as Wichita State (3-1) made a roaring offense statement with a 74-57 victory against the Iowa Hawkeyes to finish the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic with a 3-1 record.
The Shocker faithful who showed up in numbers for the second night in a row made their happiness known when senior point guard Clevin Hannah's name was announced in the starting lineup.
Hannah showed his appreciation with a shot-clock beating three in the game's final minutes to all but guarantee a Shocker victory. He finished his first evening back on the floor with five points and six assists.
Hannah had his choice of shooters to dish it out to as the Shockers shot a red-hot 57-percent from the floor. Sophomore guard Toure' Murry and fellow sophomore Garrett Stutz set season highs on Tuesday with 18 points apiece. In the meantime, junior Graham Hatch also had a night with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
In the first half, it was Hannah's part-time back up that lit up the floor in the early minutes. Murry drove for a layup and hit a pair of threes in less than five minutes to start the night. A three for Hatch backed with a Gabe Blair put back gave the Shockers a lead they would never relinquish, 15-12.
The highlight of the half, however, went to the hometown hero. Stutz crushed a dunk and drained a three in the next possession to stretch the Shocker lead, 20-14. The Kansas City, Mo., native was on fire, scoring 10-straight for the Shockers, highlighted by his second three-pointer of the evening. The seven-foot center put down 16 points in 13 first-half minutes.
With less than seven minutes to play in the opening half, the Shocks used a 5-0 Hatch run to build a 30-22 lead. Hatch drained his third three of the game with five minutes to play to not only push the Shocker lead to 33-24, but to put two Shockers in double-digits just 15 minutes in.
From there, the Shockers caught fire for a 10-4 run. Freshman guard Demetric Williams' three capped off a valiant defensive effort by Stutz. His diving after a loose ball sparked the fast break that provided Williams the opportunity to help build the Shockers' commanding, 40-26 lead. Stutz snuck in a layup at the buzzer, sending the Shockers to the break with a 44-30 advantage.
The Hawkeyes came out strong to start the second half, sparking a 12-5 run triggered by nine combined points for Iowa guards Cully Payne and Eric May, cutting the lead 49-42.
Wichita State responded. Three games and an exhibition into the season, Hannah sunk his first bucket of his senior year. The guard grabbed his own offensive rebound and put it back for a layup, causing a roar from the Shocker fan base. Three minutes later, Murry nailed a long jumper and a layup to provide additional room, 55-46.
Although Iowa made several attempts to fight back, the Shockers had the answer and never lost control of the game or its tempo. Murry's three at the six-minute mark all but sealed the deal for the Shockers as they took the 66-50 lead en route to the 74-57 victory.
The Shockers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 28 when they take on the Vikings from Cleveland State. Tipoff is set for 1:05 p.m.
