Box Score

WICHITA – Wichita State opened the 2009-10 season with a 80-64 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University Sunday afternoon in the Subregional game of the O'Reilly Auto Parts College Basketball Experience (CBE).

Toure Murry led the Shockers with 16 points and seven assists.  JT Durley had 15 points while Graham Hatch added another 12 points and two steals.

Mike Scott had a game best 18 points for Fairleigh Dickinson to go along with six assists.  Sean Baptiste added 16 points and four rebounds.

David Kyles had 11 points and seven boards for WSU.

WSU started out on an 11-2 run as Durley went 3-for-3 from the floor for six points.  Aaron Ellis had a bucket and a pair of boards while Kyles came off the bench and added another basket.

Fairleigh Dickinson went 2:50 between baskets in the first half, scoring their third point of the game on a free-throw.  FDU then added another bucket at the 13:03 mark, making the score 19-5 in favor of the home team.

The Shocker lead continued to balloon as FDU fell behind by 19 as Durley dropped in a layup off an assist from Murry.  A 5-0 run by the Knights trimmed the deficit to 10 (32-22) as Mike Scott and Terence Grier contributed to the FDU attack.

Graham Hatch and Garrett Stutz answered back for WSU as Hatch dropped in his second three-pointer of the half with Stutz following with a layup on the Shockers next possession.

The two teams exchanged free-throws with Alvin Mofunanya giving Fairleigh Dickinson a basket with just under 10 ticks left in the half.  WSU stormed down the court with Kyles throwing up a long attempt from the far corner that found nothing but net to send the Shockers into the break with a commanding 43-26 lead.

Durley led all scorers at the half with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field.  Hatch added another nine points while Murry had eight points, five boards, and three assists for WSU.

Scott was the leading scorer for FDU, pulling in eight points along with three assists.

Wichita State opened the second half in the same manner as the first with a pair of buckets greeting the Knights, courtesy Ellis and Kyles.  FDU responded with a 6-0 run only to have WSU counter with an 8-0 fueled by a long trey from Demetric Williams.

Murry had a pair of baskets including a layup, plus one, to make the score 61-36 with 13:25 remaining.

Wichita State went up by as much as 25 until a charge by Fairleigh Dickinson cut the lead down 18 with 7:38 to play.  The WSU advantage bounced back up to 20 on a Durly jumper as the two teams exchanged baskets for the next four minutes.

FDU inched closer with 3:29 remaining as back-to-back buckets from Baptiste and Grier made the score 78-62.  Baptiste added another pair, coming on a jumper just outside of the paint 27 seconds later before the Shockers were able to answer on a pair of free-throws from Hatch.

The double-digit deficit proved to be too much for the Knights to overcome as WSU closed out the contest by holding FDU scoreless for the remainder of the game.
