Cyclones Slam Past Softball, 8-0

WICHITA -- A grand slam by Alex Johnson put the exclamation point on a tough day for Wichita State (15-8) as the Cyclones (18-4) dropped the Shockers, 8-0, in a six-inning run rule on Sunday at the 2008 Shocker Invitational at Wilkins Stadium.

Kara L'Huillier posted the first hit of the game with a one-out floater to shallow right-center, but she got no further than first as the Shockers could pose no threat in the first.

Iowa State got on the board first with two runs on a pair of two-out singles by the top of the Cyclone order after Careligh Berry and Kelsey Kidwell both stole second to get into scoring position to come home on the singles by Kidwell and Courtney Wray, giving ISU a 2-0 lead after three.

Alex Johnson gave the Cyclones even more offense when she took the first pitch from Bright in the at bat over the left-center wall for a grand slam, ending Ashly Bright's (7-6) day after 4.2 innings, giving up six earned on four hits to pick up the loss.

It was all the offense freshman hurler Rachel Zabriskie (8-1) would need, as the Austin, Texas native silenced the Shocker bats all afternoon, scattering two hits in the complete-game shutout.
