Shocks Drop Series to Aces, 5-0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Wichita State softball team (24-14, 6-4) fell behind early on a two-run home run by Brittany Herald in the first and could never recover as Evansville (16-9, 4-2), took the series win with a 5-0 victory over the Shockers Sunday afternoon at Cooper Stadium.

Ashley Bright (14-10) took the loss for the Shockers, dropping her second-straight decision of the weekend.

UE struck first with the shot by Herald straight away to center, giving the Aces an early 2-0 lead. The Shockers had early opportunities, stranding a runner in each of the first three innings, but UE starter Ashley Hobbs (3-2) kept the Shocker hitters off balance in the early going.

Evansville loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, and the Aces made Bright pay with a two-RBI single down the left line by Kristen Shirk that extended the Aces' lead to 4-0.

Jennifer Stahlhut added another home run in the sixth, and that finished the day for Bright, giving up five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.

Hobbs worked the complete-game three-hit shutout, blanking the Shockers for the first time in the last 25 conference games as the Shockers last failed to score against a Valley opponent on April 4, 2007 at Missouri State.

The Shockers return to action at 3 p.m., Wednesday at Missouri State.
