Box Score Wichita, Kan.- Wichita State (2-0) dominated the Northwestern Red Raiders (1-2), 10-1, in this afternoon's game at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers started early, crossing three runs in their first at bats of the game. Andy Dirks and Ryan Jones drew consecutive walks and Josh Workman dropped one just inside the left field line for a double that brought home the runs. Tyler Weber took a pitch to the opposite field for a double, bringing in Workman.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the top of the third inning after a lead-off hit by Mike Zoellner. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to scoring position and an Austin Malone single to shallow left field plated the run.
Wichita State got that one back and added one more in the bottom half of the third. Workman was on board via a walk and Conor Gillaspie had his first hit of the season, a triple blasted into the right-center gap. Workman scored on Gillaspie's hit and Tyler Hill popped one over the third baseman's head to bring home Gillaspie.
Gillaspie led off the fifth with his second triple of the day, a hit down the right field line and Weber followed with an RBI double. Sophomore Dusty Coleman hit the Shockers' first home run of the season, a two run blast over the right field wall, to put WSU up, 8-1.
With one out, due to a diving play by freshman left fielder Kevin Hall, Northwestern hit three consecutive singles to threaten in the top of the sixth. Starting pitcher Aaron Shafer picked off the runner at first and caught Zoellner looking to end the inning and strand the runners.
The Shockers never let up, adding one in both the sixth and seventh innings. Ryan Jones stole second after a one-out single and Gillaspie took one back up the middle to push him home. Coleman had a lead-off hit and moved to second on a groundout, before being replaced by Taylor Brown as a pinch runner. Brown advanced to third on a single by Hall and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Caster.
Gillaspie went 3-for-4, which included two triples, two runs and two RBI. Weber and Coleman's lines matched, each with two hits, two RBI and one run. Hall had a successful first game as a Shocker, offensively and defensively, with two put outs, a single and a stolen base.
Shafer (1-0) lasted six innings, scattering eight hits and five strikeouts, while allowing one earned run and no walks. Logan Hoch threw two innings, with one hit and one strikeout. Matt Smith closed the final inning in a three up, three down fashion.
The Shockers went through five Red Raider pitchers as starter Mihai Burlea (1-1) was tagged with the loss and five earned runs on four hits and four walks.
