Wichita State jumped to an early 1-0 lead by driving in its lead-off runner in the top of the first. Damon Sublett lined one into the outfield on the left side and KU centerfielder Kyle Murphy's diving effort allowed the ball to reach the warning track. Sublett cruised into second and advanced to third on a Derek Schermerhorn line drive to centerfield. A sacrifice fly to leftfield from Matt Brown plated the run.
Ryne Price was on board for Kansas in the bottom of the second with a single to rightfield. With two outs, Preston Land dropped one over second base and Schermerhorn threw home wildly, allowing the run to score and the runner to advance to third. A fly ball to centerfield ended the inning, but not before the Jayhawks had knotted the score, 1-1.
The Shockers loaded the bases in the third with a Schermerhorn single, a Jayhawk error and a hit batsman. A ground ball from Gillaspie drove in one and a two RBI single from Tyler Weber gave Wichita State a 4-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Kansas squeezed one across in the bottom half with a double from Kyle Murphy and a sacrifice fly by Brock Simpson.
Not only were the Shocker bats on fire, but Wichita State hurlers held KU to three runs and eight hits. Starter Rob Musgrave earned the win in the pre-determined split, going three innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits. Khol Nanney went one inning, gave up one hit and struck one out. Anthony Capra threw four shut-out innings picking up five strike outs and giving up only one hit. Kyle Touchatt pitched the eighth and struck out two of the five batters he faced. Jared Simon closed the ninth, allowing one earned run, but striking out two.
A four-run fifth inning opened up the lead and the Shockers would score in every inning after that. In the fifth, runs scored on a ground ball from Brown and singles by Gillaspie and Hill.
A two-run homer in the sixth by designated hitter Josh Workman extended the lead, 10-2. Bret Bascue, appearing in his first collegiate game, hit a solo homerun in the seventh.
Wichita State crossed seven runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Brown's two-run homerun, a double by Workman, and triple by Ryan Jones. Workman led off the ninth with a single and came home on a double by Hill.
The Jayhawks added one in the bottom of the ninth after a walk to Robby price scored on a double by Nick Faunce. But it was too little, too late, as Simon struck out the last batter of the game to secure the 18-3 win.
