Bluejays shoot-past Shocks, 71-54

Omaha, Neb.- The Wichita State men's basketball team fell to 17-13 and 8-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference after a 71-54 defeat at Creighton (19-10, 13-5) Saturday afternoon.

 

The Shockers were led by P.J. Couisnard's 16 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Braeuer was the only other Shocker to reach double-figures with 10 points. Nick Porter led four CU players in double-figures with 17 points.

 

Nate Funk started slow but scored 11 points in the second half to finish with 16 points. Dane Watts hit a career-high five three-pointers for 15 points while Anthony Tolliver chipped-in 11 points.

 

Watts put the Bluejays on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer on the team's first possession. WSU took its only lead of the half three minutes into the game behind layups from Couisnard and Martin gave the Shockers a 4-3 lead.

 

CU used a 14-6 run to take a 17-10 lead with 7:23 on the clock. Tolliver scored all seven of his first-half points during the run. The Shockers countered with a 13-6 run of their own to tie the score at 23 with just under two minutes left in the half. However the Bluejays closed out the half on a 10-2 run to take a 33-25 halftime lead.

 

Only four Shockers managed to score in the first-half, led by Couisnard's 10 points. Watts paced the Bluejays going a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc for nine points.

 

CU extended its lead to double-digits by opening the second half on an 11-4 run in the first five minutes of the half. The Shockers cut the lead to eight, 55-47, after Sean Ogirri capped-off a 10-2 run with a pair of free-throws. The Bluejays responded with a quick 7-2 run to push the lead back into double-digits.

 

WSU would not get any closer than 11 in the final five minutes as the Bluejays salted the game away with free-throws down the stretch and came away with the 71-54 win.

 

The Bluejays shot 46 percent from the field including going 9-of-16 from the three-point line. WSU was held to just 40 percent from the field and 16 percent from behind the arc.

 

The Shockers will be back in action on Fri., March 2 in the first round of the Missouri Valley conference tournament. All MVC Tournament games will be shown on Fox Sports Net, and the championship game can be seen on CBS.
