Biography
At WSU: An excellent student who had basketball success just 30 minutes south of Wichita in Oxford who will be a non-scholarship player.
High School: Averaged 30.7 points to lead the state of Kansas in 2008-09, 8.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 6.1 steals a game for Oxford High School and coach Kyle Green… The Wildcats won the league title his sophomore and junior seasons, and the league tournament his sophomore season… As a junior OHS was a 2A sub-state runner-up…As a senior he led his team to runner-up in the league and league tournament... His honors included two years as an all-state and three years on the all-league team… He was also a McDonald’s All-America nominee and all-State top 15… After his senior season, he played in the Kansas-Nebraska Border Battle at the Hartman Arena north of Wichita, as well as the KBCA All-Star game… He was also named KSOK Athlete of the Year, the Winfield Courier Athlete of the Week six times, and the Marion Tournament All-Tournament Team... His teams improved from 9-13 to 18-4, 17-7 and 14-8 for a four-year total of 58-32…His game-highs were 50 points against Elk Valley, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and 13 steals…Was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and baseball, a three-year letterwinner in football and a one-year letterwinner in track and field… He also earned honors in football where he was named to the all-district team, and in baseball where he was also named all-state… Also competed in the state track and field meet in WSU’s Cessna Stadium where he qualified for the finals in the 200-meters and the long jump... Academically, he was OHS Valedictorian, a Kansas Honor Scholar, a Kansas Governor’s Scholar and a Kansas Board of Regents Scholar and carried a 3.98 GPA.
Personal: Son of John and Mindy Mayes...Bryce Neal Mayes was born Oct. 24, 1990 in Wichita...Has older brothers Brandon and Brent, and a sister-in-law, Amber... Also considered a non-scholarship situation at Oklahoma State, and scholarships from Southwestern, Newman, Cowley County CC, and Coffeyville CC…His brother, Brent, played baseball at Ottawa University, while his father, John, played football and basketball at Friends University … Is majoring in Pre-Med at WSU with a career goal to become a surgeon.
