What Dennis wants fans to know about him: “I’m more than just an athlete. I want people to know that my journey has been built on perseverance, faith, discipline and the courage to keep moving forward even when life has not gone according to plan. As an international student-athlete from Kenya, I have had to adjust to a new country, a different academic system and the demands of competing at the Division I level while being far away from my family and support system. I would want fans to know that every time I step on the track, I am representing much more than myself. I represent my family, the people who believed in me back home, international students chasing opportunities far from home, and young athletes who may be wondering whether their dreams are possible. My journey has included success, disappointment, injuries, uncertainty, and major changes, but I have continued to show up and work toward becoming better. I have experienced moments when things seemed to be going perfectly and other moments when I had to rebuild. I know what it feels like to have opportunities taken away, to face setbacks, and still decide that the story is not finished. That resilience is something I want people to see whenever I compete. I also want to be known for the person I am away from competition. Leadership, service, faith, education, and helping other people are important parts of who I am. I have tried to create communities where people feel that they belong and to use the opportunities I have received to encourage others.”
