Career Summary:
Physical, “bully guard” who could run the point or play out on the wing, as needed… Over two seasons (2019-20), averaged 7.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists with a 1.70 assist-to-turnover ratio…  Logged times in 67 games with 52 starts… Helped WSU to the NIT semifinals as a freshman… Transferred to Texas Tech after his sophomore season.

2019-20 (Sophomore):
Topped the team in assists (3.4) and minutes (27.2)… Ranked among the AAC’s top-10 in assists (10th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (6th, 1.55)… Twice made the league’s weekly honor roll (Nov. 18 and Dec. 9)… Appeared in 30 games with 24 starts and averaged 10.3 points and 3.5 rebounds… Improved to 38.1 percent from the three-point line (24-of-63) after hitting just 26.3 percent (10-of-38) as a freshman… Scored in double-figures 18 times… Five-time winner of Gregg Marshall’s “Junkyard Dog” award – tied for the team lead... AAC All-Academic Team qualifier (3.00+ GPA in 2019-20).
 
Notable Performances:
  • Tallied six assists and scored eight of his 15 points over the final 2:16 in a come-from-behind win over Temple (Feb. 27).
  • Handed out seven assists with just one turnover against Tulane (Feb. 16) and became just the sixth Shocker to record 200 career assists before the end of his sophomore season.
  • Scored a team-high 16 points with two steals to key a win over No. 21 Memphis (Jan. 9).
  • 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in the Jan. 4 win over Ole Miss.
  • Played a career-high 36 minutes and finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and a team-high five assists in a home win over (rv/25) VCU on Dec. 21.
  • Tallied 11 assists (tied for the second-most ever by a Shocker in a true road game) with just one turnover in the Dec. 8 win at (rv/25) Oklahoma State to go with seven points, eight rebounds and three steals. The following day he was named to the AAC Honor Roll for the second time.
  • Averaged 11.3 points, 3.8 assists in four Cancun Challenge games and hit 6-of-8 threes to make the all-tournament team.
  • Team-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the Nov. 23 win over ORU.
  • Shared high scoring honors with 15 points against Gardner-Webb (Nov. 9).
  • Earned AAC Honor Roll status after scoring a career-high 18 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting to go with six rebounds and five assists in 22 turnover-free minutes against UT Martin (Nov. 16).
  • Injured his ankle four minutes into the season-opener and missed his first career game (Nov. 9 vs. Texas Southern). 
2018-19 (Freshman):
2x American Freshman of the Week... Set WSU’s freshman assists record (126 total), breaking Joe Griffin’s 32-year old mark... Started 28 times (most by a WSU freshman in 10 years), including 23-straight to end the year... Averaged 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists in 24.1 minutes... 1.85 assist-to-turnover ratio was the highest ever for a WSU true freshman (min. 3 apg)... Led all American Athletic Conference freshmen in both assists-per-game and A:TO ratio... Solidified the point guard position over the last two months of the year, averaging 4.5 assists with an outstanding 2.79 ratio (81 A : 29 TO) over the final 18 games, during which the team went 14-4... Team assist leader in 19 of the 37 contests… Scored in double-figures eight times.

Notable Performances:
  • Season-high 10 assists at Tulsa (Feb. 20) was the most by a Shocker freshman in 46 years.
  • Finished with nine more assists against Memphis (Feb. 24), despite playing just 19 minutes due to foul trouble, along with 10 points.
  • Earned American Freshman of the Week status after handing out 19 assists in the two games against Tulsa (Feb. 20) and Memphis (Feb. 23) -- tied with Fred VanVleet (2015) for the best two-game stretch by a Marshall Era Shocker.
  • AAC Freshman of the Week for the second time on Mar. 4 after averaging 10.5 points and 5.0 assists with a 5.00-to-1 ratio in wins over UConn (Feb. 28) and at SMU (Mar. 3).
  • Scored a season-high 16 points at UConn (Jan. 26).
  • Dished five assists in season-high 35 minutes against Cincinnati (Jan. 19) on CBS.
  • Finished with 12 points and eight rebounds in 32 minutes at VCU (Dec. 22).
  • Notched his first double-figure scoring game with 14 points and six assists in 31 minutes in a Charleston Classic win over Appalachian State (Nov. 16).
  • First WSU true freshman to start a season opener in a decade; played 22 minutes vs. LA Tech (Nov. 6) and  hit all three of his shots on the way to six points and five assists. 
High School:
Rivals three-star recruit… Signed with WSU in April over finalists Butler, UMass and Temple…  As a senior in 2018, led Independence High School to a 31-1 record and North Carolina’s Class 4A state championship… Second Team NCBCA All-State selection… First Team All-District 9… Averaged 16.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.2 steals…  Tallied 13 points and seven rebounds in the state title game, played at UNC’s Dean Smith Center, to earn Most Valuable Player honors… Selected to compete in the North Carolina-South Carolina All-Star game… Missed his entire junior year with a knee injury… Had personal-bests of 33 points, 15 rebounds and 14 assists… Coached by Preston Davis at Independence and by Derrick Wall on the AAU circuit for Team Loaded.
 
Personal:
Born April 15, 2000 in Champaign, Ill… Son of Rosso and Kimberly Burton… Comes from a large family of athletes.... Mother played at Alabama A&M… Has a younger brother, Amonti, and two older sisters, Kimera and Destani who both played college basketball on full scholarships… Uncle, Todd Peat, played six seasons in the NFL for the Cardinals and Raiders… Cousin, Andrus Peat, plays for the New Orleans Saints and was the 13th overall pick in the 2015 draft... Also has two aunts, Pamela White and Tammy Newton, who played college basketball... Majoring in Communications.
