Sammy Esposito

Sammy Esposito is in his second season at Wichita State after being hired by Head Coach Todd Butler on July 7, 2017. Esposito is the hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator for WSU.

In his inaugural season in the Shocker dugout in 2018, he helped the team compile a 35-21-1 overall record, including a 23-8-1 tally at Eck Stadium and a 25-5 mark in non-conference action.

Esposito coached third baseman Alec Bohm, who became the 56th Shocker to earn All-America honors, and was taken third overall by the Phillies in the MLB Draft, becoming the second-highest draft pick in program history.

Including Bohm, Esposito coached six Shocker hitters that were drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft.

He also instructed American Athletic Conference first team position players Gunnar Troutwine and Luke Ritter.

In their first season in The American, the Shockers ranked second in team hitting (.289) in conference play, first in on-base percentage (.381), runs scored (150) and RBI (140), second in hits (238) and walks (107), and third in slugging percentage (.426), triples (4) and total bases (351).

Before coming to Wichita State, Esposito spent five seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina. He was a volunteer assistant coach for the Gamecocks from 2007-2012.

While an assistant with the Gamecocks, he coordinated all on-and-off campus recruiting and roster management of incoming classes. He collected scouting reports and reviewed them with the coaching staff and team. He also served as hitting coach and third base coach and was the position coach for the catchers and infielders.

Four of his recruiting classes were ranked in the top-10 nationally and he was a part of two national championships (2010, 2011) and one national runner-up (2012). He helped guide the Gamecocks to eight NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure and he had 21 recruited players drafted while at South Carolina.

From 2005-07, Esposito was the volunteer assistant coach at Georgia Southern. He served as the catching instructor and assisted with hitting instruction and infield, while being the first base coach for a team that finished in the top-three of the Southern Conference standings.

In the summer of 2007, he was an assistant coach for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League. Y-D won the Cape Cod Championship that season following a league-best record of 31-12-1 in the regular season.

Esposito has also been involved with several baseball camps in the Southeast Region including South Carolina, NC State and Richmond.

He lettered as a catcher at NC State from 1999-2002, while serving as team co-captain in 2001 and 2002. He is the son of former NC State head baseball coach Sam Esposito, who coached the Wolfpack from 1967-87.

Esposito earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology/criminal justice from North Carolina State in 2005.

He and his wife Neal have a son, Sam, and two daughters, Olivia and Lily.
