WICHITA, Kan. -- Max Kaufer delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the eighth and
Caleb Reed spun five scoreless innings in relief to lift Wichita State to a 3-2 win over Omaha on Thursday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Kaufer's double broke a 2-2 tie, coming on the heels of
Josh Wulfert's hustling two-out infield single that kept the inning alive. On a 1-1 pitch, Kaufer yanked a hanging curveball into the left field corner to score
Owen Washburn, who had doubled earlier in the frame with one out.
That advantage was all that Reed (2-0) needed, as the big right-hander breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to earn the win. Reed capped his outing by retiring the final 13 Omaha hitters he faced, striking out five and walking just one to go along with one hit.
The Shockers (7-2) and Mavericks (3-4) traded runs back and forth in the middle innings, with a single run scoring in four consecutive half innings from the bottom of the third through the top of the fifth.
Jaden Gustafson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third, but Omaha answered right back when Tyler Bishop knocked in a run with an RBI groundout in the fourth. Washburn reclaimed the lead for WSU with a booming solo homer to right center in the next half inning, but the Mavericks again had the response when NIck Riggs coaxed a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the top of the fifth to level the ledger at 2-2.
Both starters finished with no-decisions; Wichita State's
Matthew Cuccias allowed two runs (one earned) over 4.0 innings with six strikeouts and four walks, while Omaha's Maddox Meyer conceded two runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings, striking out four without a walk.
Omaha reliever Oliver Mabee (0-2) was saddled with the loss.
The Shockers and Mavericks continue the series on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 pm CT.Â
