IRVING, Texas — After posting a flawless 5-0 record, Wichita State's
Pablo Roche Alcaya was named the American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Alcaya's 5-0 mark across singles and doubles guided the Shockers to two team wins over Oral Roberts and UTSA, while coming just short of upsetting No. 10 Oklahoma.
Â
Alcaya's signature wins of the week came on Friday against the Sooners, when he defeated No. 107-ranked Johan Rodriguez in straight sets 7-6 (5), 6-1. In doubles, he and
Zaid Al Mashni knocked off the No. 32-ranked pairing of Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides, 6-3.
Â
Against UTSA on Sunday, Alcaya clinched the match for Wichita State with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.
Â
The freshman from Zaragoza, Spain, has earned wins in his last four singles decisions and five of his last six overall. In doubles, he has paired with Al Mashni to win five of six matches.
Â
Alcaya is the first Wichita State men's tennis player to earn conference player of the week honors since Feb. 1, 2022, when Nicolas Acevedo received the award.
Â
Wichita State and Alcaya return to action on Friday, Feb. 13, at Boise State at Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
