VERMILLION, S.D. – Wichita State (7-3) won its 35
th-straight match against Drake (3-6) with a 3-1 win at the South Dakota Classic. The Shockers won by scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-21.
Three different Shockers collected double-doubles with
Maddie Wilson having 11 kills and a career-high 11 blocks. The 11 blocks is a school record for blocks in a four-set match in the rally scoring era.
Sydney Dunning finished with 13 kills and a career-high 17 digs, while
Jordan Heatherly had 39 assists and 11 digs.
Gabi Maas led the Shockers with 20 digs, while
Grace Hett added a career-high 10.
Brooklyn Leggett just missed a double-double with 11 kills and a career-high nine blocks.
The Shockers jumped out to a quick lead in the first set behind multiple Drake hitting errors. A kill by
Brooklyn Leggett pushed the lead to 10-5 and a Leggett/
Maddie Wilson block and
Sydney Dunning service ace increased the lead to 18-9. WSU closed out the set 25-14.
WSU again started fast in the second set grabbing a 16-7 advantage before the Bulldogs started chipping away. DU went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 18-17. The Shockers answered with three of the next four points with kills from
Elinor Engel,
Emerson Wilford, and Dunning to give the Shockers a 21-18 lead. The Bulldogs answered with five-straight to go in front 23-21 and held on to win the set 25-22.
The third set went back and forth until the Shockers grabbed a 15-12 lead after a kill by Leggett. The Bulldogs pulled within 19-18 and then tied it at 22 before the Shockers used a block by Wilson and Leggett, a Dunning service ace and a Wilford kill to win the set 25-23.
WSU took control early in the fourth with a 14-6 lead before DU slowly pulled within three at 22-19. The Shockers closed out the set with multiple Drake hitting errors and a Wilson kill for the 25-21 win.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 19 at the South Dakota Classic against host South Dakota at 7 p.m. CT.
