HOUSTON -- Treyton Rank hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift Rice to a 4-3 win over Wichita State on Friday night at Reckling Park.
Wichita State (15-33, 7-15) took a one-run lead in the top of the 12th inning when
Cole Dillon poked a two-out RBI single to score
Jordan Rogers, but the Shockers were unable to hold the lead as Cole Green tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left off reliever
Aaron Arnold. WSU later loaded the bases in the inning with three consecutive two-out walks, but
Jeremiah Arnett was able to keep the game going by inducing a fly out to center.
In the 13th, the Shockers got a pair of walks from Rice reliever Austin Eppley, but stranded both before Rank's solo homer led off the home half of the inning.
Rice (16-34, 9-13) finished with just five hits but three were solo home runs. Colin Robson had the Owls other long ball with a blast on the first pitch thrown by WSU starter
Grant Adler.
Adler pitched brilliantly in a no decision, trading zeroes with Rice starter Davion Hickson. Adler allowed just three hits and two runs over 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking three. Hickson pitched into the ninth for the Owls, working 8.0 innings and conceding two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
WSU reliever
Nick Potter turned in the best outing of his career, firing four hitless, scoreless innings with six strikeouts to get the game to the 12th.
After Robson's home run gave Rice an early 1-0 lead, the Shockers struck back for two runs on a
Jaden Gustafson RBI triple and Dillon infield single for a 2-1 lead. Green tied the game with an RBI single of his own in the fourth, and the score stayed 2-2 until the 12th.
Rogers set the program's career hit by pitch record with his 51st and 52nd HBPs, the latter coming leading off the top of the ninth inning. Gustafson and Dillon were the only Shockers with multi-hit games.
Wichita State and Rice continue the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm CT.
