DALLAS – The No. 49 Wichita State women's tennis team saw their six-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of the No. 63 SMU Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex, losing 4-1.
The loss for the Shockers (12-7) is their first since exactly one month ago, when they lost 4-3 to Memphis on March 6 in Wichita. The six-match win streak was the longest for WSU since 2019.
In doubles, SMU took control early with a swift 6-2 win at court three over
Anne Knuettel and
Tatyana Nikolenko. The Mustangs kept the pressure on and eventually took down
Giorgia Roselli and
Theodora Chantava at court one 6-3 to take the opening point.
In singles, SMU kept the pressure on with a 1-0 lead and taking first sets on four of six singles courts.
Kristina Kudryavtseva was the first to fall for Wichita State, losing 6-1, 6-4 at court three.
Later, No. 94
Xin Tong Wang fell in her return to the lineup, losing, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and putting the Mustangs up 3-0.
The Shockers fought back, with
Theodora Chantava earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at court three, making the score 3-1.
Chantava's win kept things optimistic for Wichita State as Knuettel and Nikolenko were both battling in tight third sets and Roselli held a narrow lead over her opponent at court two.
Unfortunately for Wichita State, the Mustangs were able to stem the turning tide, knocking out Knuettel with a very close 6-2, 2-6, 4-6 decision, clinching and ending the match with a 4-1 score.
Next up, the Shockers head to Houston to take on No. 48 Rice on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at George R. Brown Tennis Center.
