CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Trailing 2-1 and down to their final out in the top of the ninth, Wichita State scored three runs on a Charlotte error to steal a 4-2 win on Saturday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
Facing Charlotte closer Joseph Taylor (2-3), the Shockers loaded the bases on two singles and a walk sandwiched around two outs. Head coach
Brian Green summoned true freshman
Hunter Carlson as a pinch hitter; after taking a strike, Carlson hit a sharp line drive to right that 49ers right fielder Noah Furcht misplayed, rolling all the way to the wall and scoring the three Shocker baserunners for a 4-2 lead.
Things got interesting in the bottom of the ninth, as Wichita State closer
Nick Potter put the tying runs on base with one out via a pair of walks. A groundout moved the runners to second and third, then Potter retired Furcht on a pop up to third to lock down his second save of the season.
The Wichita State (11-19, 4-4) offense was quiet through eight innings against four Charlotte pitchers, mustering just five hits and one run. AÂ Johnny Sutryk solo home run opened the scoring in the bottom of the third before
Josh Livingston pulled the Shockers even with a sacrifice fly. Logan Poteet put the 49ers back in front the next half inning with a sacrifice fly, giving Charlotte a 2-1 lead that lasted until the ninth.
The Shockers got a strong start from
Aaron Arnold, striking out six over 3.2 innings while allowing three hits and one run.
Jeremiah Arnett and
Owen Reynolds (1-0) combined for 4.1 strong frames in relief, fanning five and conceding just one run before Potter got the Shockers across the finish line in the ninth.
Camden Johnson,
Jaden Gustafson and
Mauricio Millan each notched two hits.
Wichita State and Charlotte conclude the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch of the finale is scheduled for 12:00 pm CT.
