WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State out-hit South Florida 12-9 but stranded 13 runners on base in a 4-1 loss on Friday night at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (12-29, 4-12) dropped their ninth straight game largely due to struggles hitting with runners in scoring position. Wichita State went 1-for-11 on the night with RISP, including 10 straight hitless at-bats after
Josh Livingston roped an RBI double in the bottom of the first that opened the scoring.
South Florida (23-16, 11-5) answered back with two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead that proved to be the final score. Carlos Jacome pulled the Bulls level with an RBI single, then with two outs in the second a catcher's interference plated the go-ahead run. Jacome was at the heart of the South Florida rally in the third, as well, tripling home Ryan Pruitt who had just rapped an RBI single.
All four runs were charged to Wichita State starter
Grant Adler (3-5), who lasted 3.0 innings while allowing six hits and striking out two. The Shockers got stellar relief work from
Owen Reynolds and
Jeremiah Arnett to keep the game within striking distance; Reynolds struck out three over 1.2 scoreless innings and Arnett fired 4.1 shutout frames with four strikeouts of his own.
South Florida starter Corey Braun (6-2) picked up the win, conceding eight hits but just one run over 5.1 innings. Landen Yorek tossed two scoreless innings in relief to secure his fifth save.
Livingston and
Kam Durnin each logged three hits for the Shockers, while
Mauricio Millan and
Camden Johnson notched two apiece in defeat.
The Shockers and Bulls conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1:00 pm CT.
