Furious Shocker Rally Not Enough in Midweek Loss

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State trailed 12-1 into the bottom of the seventh inning but brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in a 13-10 loss to Kansas State on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.

It appeared Wichita State was well on their way to a lopsided defeat as the Wildcats (20-8) scored seven runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the seventh, highlighted by a pair of home runs and five RBI from Dee Kennedy. But the Shockers (10-18) found the range against the Kansas State bullpen; Kam Durnin doubled in two runs in the seventh and Mauricio Millan followed with an RBI double of his own later in the inning that cut the lead to 12-4. Then the Shockers scored five times in the bottom of the eighth, pulling WSU to within 12-9. Jordan Rogers lined an RBI double then came around to score when Gannon Snyder dumped an RBI single into right. Millan knocked in a run with a groundout before Ryan Callahan slapped an opposite-field single to bring home two more.

Kaleb Duncan added a single in the inning to bring the tying run to the plate, but Kansas State reliever James Guyette escaped the jam with a strikeout.

The Wildcats tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, carrying a 13-9 lead into the bottom half. Guyette retired the first two hitters, but Jaden Gustafson singled and Durnin worked a walk to keep the game alive. Snyder hit a sharp line drive to right field that was dropped by Micah Dean, scoring Gustafson and again bringing the tying run to the plate. Guyette finally closed out the win by getting Millan to ground out.

Adam Arther (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Kansas State, working two scoreless innings out of the Wildcats bullpen. Tyler Dobbs (0-2) took the loss for Wichita State, allowing seven unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Only two of the 13 runs scored by Kansas State were earned thanks to three Wichita State errors; the Wildcats committed four defensive miscues of their own.

Camden Johnson led the way for the Shockers with three hits while Gustafson, Snyder and Duncan notched two apiece.

The Shockers are back in action on Friday night at Charlotte. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 5:00 pm CT.
