MEMPHIS, Tenn – The No. 54/58 Wichita State women's tennis team fell in heartbreaking fashion to No. 47/46 Charlotte, 4-3, on Tuesday at Leftwich Tennis Center.
The Shockers (12-9) suffered their third straight defeat, while Charlotte (21-4) earned their fifth straight win.
In doubles, Wichita State took a swift advantage as
Anne Knuettel and
Clara Whitaker put together a 6-2 win at court three to open doubles. At court two,
Kristina Kudryavtseva and
Theodora Chantava rallied from a 5-3 deficit to win 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the Shockers.
In singles, the Shockers kept the pressure on, taking five first sets from Charlotte.
Giorgia Roselli struck first for the Shockers, winning 6-0, 6-2 at court two.
Kudryavtseva, the only Shocker not to win her first set, fell in a tight 6-4, 6-4 decision, putting the 49ers on the board and making the score 2-1.
Heading to third sets on near all remaining courts, Charlotte evened the score with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Chantava at court five, but
Xin Tong Wang but the Shockers back in front immediately after with a 7-5, 6-4 win at court one, giving Wichita State a 3-2 match lead.
Unfortunately for the Shockers, Charlotte prevailed in the remaining two matches, beating
Tatyana Nikolenko 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at court four, and clinching the win with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at court six over Knuettel, taking the win 4-3.
Next up, the Shockers open play in the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 17 at Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn.
