Tulsa Spoils Senior Day with 73-63 Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Tulsa played the role of spoiler on Senior Day, downing Wichita State, 73-63, on Sunday in the regular season finale inside Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (18-13, 8-10) hadn't lost on Senior Day since 2018 and hadn't lost to Tulsa at home since 2001. Both streaks came to an end on a day when Tulsa led for 31 of the 40 minutes.

Before the game Wichita State recognized eight seniors: Quincy Ballard, Xavier Bell, Harlond Beverly, Bijan Cortes, Ronnie DeGray III, Justin Hill, AJ McGinnis and Zane Meeks.

Corey Washington scored a team-high 14 points to go with eight rebounds. Harlond Beverly chipped in 11 points off the bench and Xavier Bell added 10. Quincy Ballard pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Wichita State finished the game just 3-for-16 from three-point range and converted on only 38.5 percent of its attempts overall. Tulsa made 61.3 percent of its attempts in the second half to finish at 50.8 percent for the game.

Wichita State came out of the gates slow, allowing Tulsa to build an early double digit lead, 19-8, just 8:00 minutes into the game. Wichita State missed eight of its first 12 attempts, while Tulsa converted 62 percent of its tries.

Following a Wichita State timeout, the bench sparked a 14-2 run to catapult the Shockers into the lead, 22-21, on a Beverly wing triple. Twelve of the 14 points in the run came from the bench: Matej Bosnjak (2), McGinnis (5) and Beverly (5).

Tulsa's blazing start cooled off over the final 10 minutes, as they finished the half just 3-for-15 from the field and 39.3 percent for the half. At the half the game was knotted at 27.

The start of the second half was much like the first in that Tulsa came out firing. They went back in front by six, 37-31, behind a 10-4 run.

With 7:48 left in the game Tulsa clinged to a 58-50 lead as its torrid shooting continued. The Hurricane converted on 14 of its first 19 attempts (73.7 percent).

Two minutes later the deficit grew to 12, its largest lead of the game.

A DeGray three-pointer followed by a Washington layup pulled Wichita State within seven, briefly giving the home team and crowd momentum. But it would be short lived. Tulsa immediately silenced the Shocker faithful with a dunk and pull-up jumper to push the margin right back to double digits, 68-57.

Neither team would score over the next 1:44 until a pair of Washington free throws. The next trip down Washington punched one home on a dunk to make it 68-61.

Inside the final minute, Tulsa converted at the free throw line to ice the game.
