WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 54 Wichita State women's tennis team earned their fifth consecutive victory with a 4-1 win over the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon at Wichita Country Club.
The Shockers (11-6) are now 4-1 against American Athletic Conference opponents this season and dealt UTSA (17-4) their second consecutive loss with the win.
Playing with a slew of new pairings in doubles, Wichita State struck first on the opening courts with a 6-2 win at court one by
Theodora Chantava and
Giorgia Roselli.
UTSA would retaliate with a 6-3 win at court three over
Kristina Kudryavtseva and
Sati Aubakirova.
Vying for the point at court two,
Anne Knuettel and
Tatyana Nikolenko rallied from down 4-1 to take a 6-5 lead that they would finish with a 7-5 win to take doubles from the Roadrunners.
In singles, Kudryavtseva opened singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win at court two, putting the Shockers up 2-0.
The Roadrunners bounced back with a tight win over Chantava 6-4, 6-4 at court three, cutting their deficit in half and breaking Chantava's six-match-long win streak in singles.
Later, Roselli prevailed in a tight battle, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to give Wichita State a 3-1 lead.
Knuettel would be the hero once again, battling to force a third set that she would win 6-4, taking her match 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, securing her eighth consecutive singles win and delivering the clinch for the Shockers.
Next up, the Shockers are set to play a doubleheader against North Texas and Creighton on April 4.
